Today marks the start of a video new series showcasing one of many unique strength setups we utilize in our CrossFit classes with the spotter arms but also in our Power Hour which we will do inside the rack. Over the past year, we've integrated conjugate strength training principles and movements commonly found in conjugate strength programming on the Power Hour side into our daily CrossFit routines! These setups and novel movements not only yield incredible strength results but also help us stay healthier, making training much more enjoyable by breaking up the monotony. Today, Jack demonstrated how to set up our banded box squat. Swipe to the second slide to see it in action during class! "

“Grandview Barbell’s Story”

“The Original Functional 24 Hour Access Gym a Decade Later”

In 2013 CrossFit was starting to boom. Our gym CrossFit Grandview was one of the first to really explode and have a large membership base. By this time some clients were also becoming self educated and many had taken classes with us for 3-5 years and started dabbling in self led training outside of class.

We wanted to allow those athletes to be able to explore their fitness but things were getting crowded and there were some issues starting to arise.

Flashback to college when I would come back to visit my parents who lived outside of a small town there was a small key card entry gym that sold memberships out of a gas station. It was more of a service to the area than a money making business. I would train there everytime I was in town and now a decade later this small key fob gym gave me an idea.

Why not put functional strength equipment, bumper plates, and other crossfit inspired gear in a facility with 24/7 access to allow athletes to dive into self guided functional training. At the time the options were simply to carve out a corner in a CrossFit gym, go to a big box commercial gym or basically a glorified hotel 24/7 access gym which was the only options at the time.

This led to the idea of why not combine these and give this shot…. I didn't have much of a budget and the space we found wasn't exactly ideal for a gym but I dove in.

The gym started with some squat racks, an OLY platform, dumbbells, a couple True Form Runners, bikes and rowers in a small retail location next to a dentist office.

It started slow….. And to drive in some membership we started doing what we do best and offering some group training options.

We soon started adding classes, and experimenting with new types of group training formats. REV and Power Hour emerged from the various things we tried in those early days. As those programs started to develop the business started to get some legs and was viable after a year or so of experimentation.

What emerged was a Hybrid Open Gym/ Small group training model which is what we still see today.

What has been really fun to watch is the impact this small humble gym had. After opening I started receiving 100’s of emails from gym owners or potential gym owners all over the country wanting to start something similar and put their own spin on it.

These gyms started popping up not only locally but all over the country. Many with large budgets that were able to take the original idea to an incredible scale. I’ve spoken with many of these owners personally and lent any little bit of advice I could and watched their business blossom and grow!

Fast forward to 2024 Barbell is now a part of what we had envisioned it to be. A part of a larger holistic facility that allows members to flow from one program to another and to find their flow.

Power Hour and REV attendance are now right there with our world famous CrossFit programs.

We now have room to move in a facility loaded with equipment, amenities, full time front desk, 24 hour access, in space that is continually improving and the “idea” and reality of that idea are fully converging a decade later!

A ritual many of our members have begun is a post-CrossFit class pump on the barbell side of the gym.

Hit the daily workout and then finish up with a quick accessory to complement the daily class.

It's the best of both worlds!
