United by the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon, Jet's Pizza, M3S Sports and Roosters Wings have donated more than $66,000 to the OhioHealth Foundation to provide funding for the OhioHealth scalp cooling therapy program, an innovative cancer care treatment that can help prevent or minimize hair loss from chemotherapy.

The “Jet’s Pizza Gives Back” promotion and partnership with Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets contributed to over $43,000 of the generous gift.

This philanthropic support means cancer patients can retain a sense of dignity and control during their treatment journey – as most traditional insurance plans do not cover costs associated with scalp cooling.

But one of the teen athletes I coach inspired me to start running long distances again last winter when she asked me to go on several long runs with her. You may remember Izzy Darling from stories when he did his ambassador takeover. We checked in with her and wanted to share some of her feedback about her FIRST HALF MARATHON!

How did it go?
-It went well! I felt great for about 9 miles. Then I got really hot! But it felt so good to finish it and to complete that goal I started in January.

What was your favorite part about it?
Seeing random people I knew on the course or running the race! I loved that my mom and my friends Annie and Ryan came out on the course to support me, but it was such a surprise to see other people I knew from other walks of life who recognized me and cheered me on!

What was your biggest challenge?
The heat. I don’t think my body was prepared to run in the heat, so around mile 9 where it felt like there was no shade, I started to drop a little. I think running in the heat is something you need to learn.

What was your biggest motivation?
Honestly, doing it for myself. I wanted to say I finished a half, so I kept telling myself, “You didn’t go this far to just go this far.” My aunt ran it with me so she was a huge motivator as well. Also, all the Taylor Swift signs on the course helped. And having her new album as the soundtrack of my race.

Where did you hang your medal?
In my room. I haven’t found a proper place for it - I think it needs a friend.

“I saw the ad in Runner’s World…I always enjoyed the articles and they were promoting the Inaugural Cap City with the tagline “you can’t run them all if you don’t run the first one”. I wear the inaugural t-shirt and get a post race picture with all the medals.
