The Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church (COB) has issued a statement mourning the death of civil rights movement architect and cultural icon, Rev. James Morris Lawson, Jr. He was 95.

Rev. Lawson—a United Methodist preacher, a leading theoretician and tactician of nonviolence within the Civil Rights Movement, and a mentor to the Nashville Student Movement and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and specifically, the late Congressman John Lewis—passed suddenly on Sunday (June 9) of cardiac arrest.

During the 1960s, Rev. Lawson served as a close adviser to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who called him “the leading theorist and strategist of nonviolence in the world.” Rev. Lawson later served as pastor of Holman UMC in Los Angeles for 25 years. Read COB statement here: https://bit.ly/4b5NjLA

Commack United Methodist Church

COMMACK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

One year before Methodism was established in America as an independent denomination, a Society was formed in Winne-Comac following a sermon preached by John Phillips, a Methodist local preacher and tailor in the British army during the Revolutionary War. The small group of local residents meeting in homes in 1783, with a total of only two dozen members, determined to establish a church, and the next year had their first preacher, Phillip Cox, assigned by Conference. In 1785 Ezekiel Cooper was appointed to the Long Island Circuit of which Comac was a part. The Comac Society was the second to be formed on Long Island, but has the distinction of being the oldest Methodist Church building in continuous use in New York State in which people still worship in the original building, with only few alterations. It was in 1789 during the pastorate of William Phoebus that James Hubbs and the community erected “a neat, substantial and commodious house of worship.” It featured a high-box pulpit, one center door, and one balcony stairs. The pulpit was lowered three times to its present height. There was no heat until 1835. Foot warmers were brought by worshippers during the cold winters.

Early clergy in Methodist churches were circuit riders who also served other Methodist groups on Long Island. They often traveled some 200 miles each month to cover their circuit and until 1869, a different preacher was assigned to Comac each year, including 1833 when the Smithtown Circuit was formed. In 1830 services were held every two weeks with “classes” held by lay men or women during the other weeks. For many years the Comac church was the only one for miles around.

In the Christian Advocate, October 25, 1888, Rev. E. Warriner describes a centennial celebration which was held September 16 and 17, 1888, a Sunday and Monday with former pastors and district superintendents present, former pastors, descendants of earlier members and many visitors. Speakers included F. C. Hill who preached on the Smithtown Circuit in 1847. His subject was “The Unsearchable Riches of Christ”, and John B. Merwin, whose father, Samuel, was on the Circuit in 1800, spoke of the great achievements in the last hundred years. Daniel Jones recalled a season of “indescribable power”, a Love Feast in 1834, repeating some of the testimonies given fifty years earlier.
