Many Concord residents and visitors are familiar with the quaint chapel that sits upon the hill at Blossom Hill Cemetery on North State Street.
Susan George Perkins, a long-time resident of Concord, donated the generous gift as a memorial to her Mother, Clara Bartlett Perkins. Clara and her husband, Hamilton Eliot Perkins, were the parents of Commodore George Hamilton Perkins, whose statue stands behind the New Hampshire State House.
The chapel was designed and built by New York State Architect Marshall Francis Oliver and completed in 1904.
Immediately following the construction, the chapel was used for burial services. The use of the chapel subsided over time and it fell into disrepair. Renovations took place in 1924, 1976, 1997 and 2020. The repair in 2020 consisted of roof repairs as well as a gas heating system to replace the wood burning stove heating process. The renovation also included repairing and painting the inside of the chapel. A walkway and outside lights were added.
Many may not realize that in addition to funeral services, the chapel can be rented for a very small fee as an event space. Wedding ceremonies, celebrations of life ceremonies, christenings, Christmas events, birthday parties, etc. have all been held there. The chapel can hold 75 people with room to set up a traditional event with an altar and an organ. It has plenty of room for a non-traditional events as well.
All are welcome. For more information, please call the Cemetery Office at (603) 225-3911.

Audi's Annual "Pitch In" - August 19-21
Please see the information below from the Friends of the City Auditorium on their annual Pitch In, August 19-21, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
“We Do Windows,” say The Friends of the Concord City Auditorium. “Windows and orchestra seats and dressing rooms, stage floors and landscaping. We sew curtains, polish chandeliers, bulbs, and send event calendars to thousands of area households.” And all in three days!
The 34th annual “Pitch In” will get our city’s historic theatre ready for its 120th year as the home of our community-based arts and entertainment. The new season starts Sunday, September 15, with the GALA Arts Party, Arnie’s Ice Cream Social and a special GALA Show featuring the Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki Trio – and it’s all free, thanks to the Walker Lecture Fund.
The Pitch In’s amazing Crew Chief is Joye Olson of Concord. The Olson family has led the Pitch In since 1992, lining up jobs and setting up supplies. Audi Friends head up every session.
Folks who “Show Up and Pitch In” annually say the project is fun, a true community-building event with a barn-raising spirit. Morning sessions start with coffee and pastry and evening sessions with a light supper. Then crews form and projects begin with a job to suit every skill and interest. Monday morning volunteers prepare the Audi’s big cooperative mailing announcing the schedule of exciting fall shows.
Plus, the Pitch In volunteers’ maintenance labor lowers City’s costs of operating the Audi (and our taxes), which in turn helps lower production costs and ticket prices. Result: the nearly 100 public events each season stay affordable and accessible to all. It’s a win-win-win!
In the theatre spirit, The Friends guarantee dramatic working conditions, an interesting cast of characters, roles for stars and chorus, no heavy lifting, air conditioning, absolutely no pay, good eats, and a chance to earn a “Sweat Equity” card.
“Just come down and help out,” The Friends say. “Show up and Pitch In.”

Located off of Interstate 89 (Stickney Hill Exit), is a small cemetery called the Stickney Hill Cemetery. It is recommended to enter the cemetery by foot - due to its location in a wooded area. The cemetery was never marked, the descendants of the Stickney family, Wayne and Sherman Stickney, donated the monument that now marks the cemetery in 2016. They also restored the original fencing that surrounded the cemetery.
The cemetery was owned and developed by the Stickney family in 1758. It was in this year that Col. Jonathan Stickney Sr. passed away from Small Pox, the previous day, his child passed away from the same illness. In those days there was much fear on transmitting the disease, because of this fear, Col. Stickney and his child were buried in a secluded area of the family farm. The cemetery was given to the City of Concord in 1842. The last known burial in the cemetery was in 1955.
It is recorded that vandalism took place at the cemetery in 1973. Stones were tipped over and, in many cases, broken into small pieces. Because the cemetery is so remote, the stones lay broken until the City removed them and had them stored at Blossom Hill Cemetery. After the painstaking efforts of Jill McDaniel-Huckins (Cemetery Administrator), George West (Cemetery staff) and the Cemetery Crew - the stones were pieced together and replaced at Stickney Hill in 2009. There are 17 confirmed burials, 9 unconfirmed burials and likely several more.
Local legend has it that Granny Aulds, buried at the cemetery, was considered by the locals to be a witch. One gentleman – Clary, claimed that he was bewitched by her. He was so frightened, he moved away from the Concord area. Many years later, he said that he knew instantly, the day and time that Granny passed away.
