Independence Day is approaching. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NHTSA , from 2018 to 2022, there were 2,228 traffic crash fatalities during the Fourth of July holiday period.
• 1,414 of those fatalities were a driver.
• 39% (545) of those drivers were drunk.
• The 21-34 age group had the highest percent (50%) of drunk drivers.
Independence Day is consistently one of the holiday periods with the highest number of impaired driving-related crash fatalities each year. If your celebrations do involve alcohol, here are some tips to make this holiday a safe and enjoyable one:
🎇 Plan ahead and designate a sober driver.
🧨 Use rideshare services or public transportation.
🎆 Know your limits and pace yourself.
🎇 Eat before you drink
🧨Take breaks often and drink water.
🎆 Be aware of the signs of intoxication.

NH Division of Liquor Enforcement, Licensing & Education to Hold Age Assessment Panel for the Recruitment of Underage Buyers for To***co & Alcohol Compliance Checks
⭐ Saturday, June 22 at 12:00 PM
⭐ Location: Medallion Opera House, 20 Park Street, Gorham, NH
Throughout the year, the New Hampshire Division of Liquor Enforcement conducts to***co and alcohol compliance checks. Compliance checks are educational programs, conducted to ensure licensed establishments throughout the state are properly identifying youthful-appearing customers who attempt to purchase to***co or alcohol products.
The checks are conducted by sending an underage buyer into an off-sale and/or on-sale licensee for them to attempt to purchase alcohol or a to***co product. If the employees of the establishment request identification from the buyer, the buyer produces their NH Driver’s License indicating they are under the legal age to purchase that product. The buyer can not lie and must tell the employee their real age, if asked.
The goal of these compliance checks is to ensure clerks, wait staff, and any other employee selling alcohol or to***co is asking for the identification of youthful appearing customers and patrons and checking the identification properly. The underage buyers used in this program must go through an approval process with the NH Division of Liquor Enforcement before being allowed to participate in the checks.
The Age Assessment Panel determines if the prospective underage buyer meets the requirements to become an underage buyer. An Age Assessment Panel consists of licensees, teachers, parents and/or community members who interact with the youth population on a regular basis. The panel assesses the age of the participant, and the majority of the panel must assess each participant’s age within the approved age range. To***co buyers must be between the ages of 16-19, and must be assessed by the panel to look between the ages of 16-19. Alcohol buyers must be between the ages of 16-19 and must look between the ages of 16-19.
Once an individual is approved through this panel process, they will be added to the Approved Minors List. Approved Minors work on a voluntary basis and will be offered a stipend of $15 per hour for Compliance Check Operations and initial training time.
The NH Division of Liquor Enforcement is hosting an Age Assessment Panel on Saturday, June 22 at 12:00 PM located at the Medallion Opera House, Gorham, NH. We anticipate the panel taking approximately an hour and a half.
Please register with Julie Mento, FDA Program Coordinator with the name and contact information of anyone who will be attending the panel. (301) 332-4681 or [email protected] or [email protected] .
Please feel free to share this information with those who may have of interest. Thank you!

As Memorial Day festivities begin to kick off, NH Liquor Enforcement urges you to consider how you will celebrate responsibly. Nationwide, alcohol-impaired fatalities (involving blood-alcohol content of 0.08 g/dL or higher) in 2021 represented 31% of the total traffic fatalities. During the 2021 Memorial Day period, 40% of fatalities involved an alcohol-impaired driver. (Source: NHTSA)
Celebrations may involve alcohol, but moderation and responsibility are key. Plan for sober transportation, stay hydrated, and limit intake to maintain awareness and good judgement. We can all do our part to ensure a safe and responsible holiday.

A common strategy utilized by underage individuals seeking to purchase alcohol is the use of false identification. NHLC - Division of Enforcement Investigators seized a total of 477 false IDs in 2023. This chart breaks down the States in which the false IDs purported to be from.
False identification can be produced in several different ways including:
• An altered birth date on a valid piece of identification.
• A valid piece of identification that is sold or lent to an underage individual.
• An expired piece of valid identification that is used by an underage individual; or
• A manufactured piece of false identification.
A great tool that is recommended for all licensed establishments in NH is the ID Checking Guide. The ID Checking Guide shows every valid driver's license, federal and military document format in actual size and color with descriptions of the security features, license number and term. The guide is published each year on March 1st and updates are available when new driver's license formats are issued after publication.
