Continuing our Taoist exercise series with our 5th neck exercise. This exercise is great to open the scalenes, SCM and other muscles in the front of the neck and upper chest. Your scalenes are responsible for many things, mostly chest breathing and stabilizing the front of your neck.

When these muscles are tight you may experience pain in the neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and headaches can be caused by tension in these muscles as well. Hit these stretches to deter some of these issues and begin to correct your posture as well.

Practice along with me and you can do however many repetitions as is comfortable and/or until the movement becomes easier and you feel the tension in your neck release. Breathe with your diaphragm go slow and relax.

Neck Exercise #4- half crescent to the front. This neck exercise is great for stretching muscles of the rear of the neck toward the sides, focus on keeping the shoulders pinned down and getting a full rotation feeling the stretch ripple in straight lines from the bottom of the skull to the top of your ribcage in the rear, on the sides toward your shoulder blades, and from your ear toward your shoulder. Taoist exercises and self massage to clear the sinuses. The pollen is blowing around a lot here in NC and I've had a lot of clients including myself with sinus issues over these past weeks. In this video I go over the anatomy behind these self massage techniques. Whenever there is sinus congestion, pepermint tea and an antiinflamatory diet will asist with aleviating sinusitis and inflamation as a whole. Avoiding phlegm producing foods is also highly recommended.

I'll be posting more Taoist exercise videos like this one. I hope you enjoy. This first eye exercise is focused on strengthening the muscles of your eyes to help them articulate and focus. If you are prone to headaches, vertigo and/or balance issues. This exercise may help prevent them, but should not be done more than twice a day. As usual ask your doctor prior to attempting these exercises.

A "slipped disc" or spinal disc herniation is a very common pathology and probably everyone of you has heard of it or even knows somebody suffering from it.

But what is it? Why would a spinal disc just "slip"?
In the top left illustration you can see the structure of such an intervertebral disc. It consists of a dense, fibrous ring of firm collagen tissue. But inside there's a smooth, jellylike mass, called the "Nucleus pulposus", highlighted in green.

As we age, the discs in our back lose some of the fluid that helps them stay flexible. The dense outer layer of the discs can form tiny tears or cracks. The thick gel inside the disc may be forced out through those cracks and cause the disc to bulge or break open.

The Nucleus pulposus now applies pressure on the spinal canal (highlighted in green on the top left illustration) and thus irritates the spinal cord. It hurts a lot and, depending where the herniation is located, stimulates the spinal nerve.

This mostly occurs in the lumbar segments because the whole weight of the upper body lies on those discs, and stimulates the nerves for our legs. This explains why many patients with herniated discs suffer from pain radiating into until their toes.
