We have often been asked, why don’t we fit dust boots to our caliper pistons?

Dust boots keep road debris from entering the piston bores, thereby protecting the vital pressure seals. Dust boots are designed to unfold and travel with the piston as discs and pads wear. However, dust boots often become damaged, torn or brittle due to heat and material abrasion, particularly in off-road conditions. At this point, they fail at their primary task of preventing debris from entering the piston bores, and they tend to fold up under the backing plates which impedes pad retraction, possibly causing the pads to drag on the disc surface.

At Powerbrake we designed our calipers to utilise internal wiper seals to prevent debris from reaching the pressure seals, and we have done so since the very first caliper we manufactured over 15 years ago. Internal wiper seals provide all of the protective benefits of dust boots, but without the complexity and diminished life span.

And while our wiper seals may look like any unassuming O-ring one can buy over any counter, we only use the highest quality seals available for maximum performance and life expectancy. These seals offer the best resistance to chemicals and can handle peak temperatures higher than any other rubber. Ideal for the extreme operating conditions in which we expect our brakes to perform.

We have been enjoying the Expedition Overland Africa series!

The three Toyota trucks that were used on this adventure are all running Powerbrake X-Line Big Brake Kits.

Crafted from a proprietary high-carbon cast iron alloy, our discs/rotors offer exceptional durability and stability under high thermal loads. Whether you're tearing up the track or tackling rugged terrain, our rotors are built to withstand the heat.

X-line features 48 curved directional cooling vanes, our rotors maximize airflow for superior cooling performance. This design significantly increases the cooling vane surface area, ensuring efficient heat dissipation even in the most demanding situations.

Understanding Piston Ratios and Materials and Why They Matter.

Using our proprietary brake simulation software, our engineers meticulously model brake balance, torque outputs, and pedal feel. This software allows us to factor in all aspects of the factory brake system and chassis dynamics under braking.

By matching piston ratios to the vehicle's hydraulic system, we optimize brake torque outputs for the platform. The result? Perfect integration with ABS, EBD, and other stability control systems, ensuring seamless performance.

Powerbrake X-Line 4x4 calipers all feature stainless steel pistons. Stainless steel is significantly more expensive to manufacture caliper pistons from than the aluminum pistons used by many of our competitors but the benefits are well worth the investment.

Stainless steel transfers heat far slower than aluminum. The result is that stainless steel pistons slow the transfer of heat from the brake pads to the calipers seals and brake fluid, thereby reducing the chances of boiling brake fluid and also extending seal life.

Our caliper pistons are manufactured by a special grade of stainless steel that is more than twice as strong as regular 304-grade (in terms of yield and ultimate tensile strengths), while maintain the same levels of corrosion resistance.

The build includes a long bed canopy camper, water tank, sliders, air compressor, roof rack and a larger wheel & tire package. All of this equipment allows the family to go to amazing places but it adds additional weight which will impact brake performance and safety. The Powerbrake kit that was installed will give confidence and consistency when applying the brakes.

With all the mods we do to our rigs, the brakes are something that is often overlooked. As far as big brake kits go, Powerbrake US / is our go-to solution for expanding the braking capabilities of your truck so that your build is balanced. Did you know we offer two types of Anodizing on our calipers?

Our Red Calipers are a Type 2 anodizing. We selected a particular dye for the Powerbrake Red anodize which has an extremely high UV and temperature resistance. The thickness of Type 2 anodizing is generally 30-40 micron.

Our Hard / Grey Calipers are a Type 3 hard anodizing. This anodizing is done under different process, resulting in a hard, dense coating that offers high abrasion resistance. Hard anodizing has a thickness closer to 50 microns and does not have color options like Type 2, and is only available in a Grey finish.

Both the Red and Grey surface coating is high level and we have done extensive testing over the years to give the protection, look and finish to our calipers.

Which color would you choose?

Thermal management is absolutely crucial for optimum brake performance and prolonged component life.

At Powerbrake, we developed rotors with improved cooling performance for all our X-line big brake kits. Instead of the more common and cost-effective straight vane rotor design, we have designed and tooled up our own directional vane rotors for all of our big brake kits. Directional (or curved) vanes are shaped like arcs to increase the flow of air through the rotor, thereby significantly enhancing cooling capacity.

Cooler running rotors extend component life and keep brake performance consistent on with additional weight. In addition to the curved vane technology, we also maximize rotor cooling through the use of larger air gaps (more airflow), and high carbon content for our rotor alloy.

Although it means more investment in tooling for each big brake kit, it ensures that each vehicle platform we design for has the ideal rotor design for the best performance and durability.
