Support NH Guns to Gardens! We just hosted our 2nd annual “Guns To Gardens” event in New Hampshire, where we transformed unwanted guns into garden tools! Support our ongoing work to bring Guns to Gardens to more New Hampshire communities by bidding on bowls, necklaces, spades, and other items created by parts of unwanted guns.

The auction closes Tuesday, July 2nd at 8:00 PM, so be sure to get your bid in by then!

Guns to Gardens helps Granite Staters remove unwanted fi****ms from their homes, without putting them back on the market. Instead guns are turned into something beautiful, such as works of art or jewelry. Guns to Gardens is organized by GunSense NH, a project of Granite State Progress and Engage New Hampshire, the NH Council of Churches, Kent Street Coalition, the Greater Concord Interfaith Council, the NH Conference of United Church of Christ, and other members of the NH Gun Violence Prevention Coalition, with generous support by the NH Charitable Foundation Gilly Fund.

And they shall beat their AR-15s into garden tools: 17 rifles, pistols, shotguns turned in at Concord church 06/10/2024

To prevent gun violence, most of the actions we need to take are about changing policy. But some actions can be as small and mighty (and as beautiful) as creating a flute out of a gun barrel! Thanks to everyone who helped make our 2nd Annual Guns to Gardens Event! a success!

And they shall beat their AR-15s into garden tools: 17 rifles, pistols, shotguns turned in at Concord church “There are a lot of people coming to the realization that fi****ms in your home don’t necessarily make you safer,” she said, and Guns to Gardens offers a solution.

What a beautiful day for NH Guns to Gardens, turning swords to ploughs. Thank you to all of our wonderful supporters and partners!

Our work together means more Granite Staters can live in homes without unwanted fi****ms. Today we collected another 17 unwanted fi****ms, a mix of pistols, shotguns, and rifles — including an AR-15. Together, we’ve helped Granite Staters remove nearly 50 guns from homes!

With the aim of reducing gun deaths, 'Guns to Gardens' gives unwanted fi****ms a new purpose • New Hampshire Bulletin 06/07/2024

We encourage readers to spread the word about both Guns to Gardens and safe storage. We can do something about gun violence. Each gun brought to the event or safely stored means one less gun that could be discovered by an inquisitive child, or stolen and used in a crime, or readily available to someone suffering a mental health crisis. We can make our families and communities safer – one gun at a time.

WATCH: Senator Chandley’s floor speech before the NH State Senate voted on party lines, 14-10, to pass HB 1336, forcing guns on company property, over the objections of everyone from the NH Retail Association and NH Hospital Association, to the Association for Justice, Easter Seals, Waypoint, and others. There are some places where guns should not be allowed. We need to protect the ability for these businesses and nonprofits to make critical decisions regarding workplace safety policies. The fact that HB 1336 provides blanket immunity for any economic loss, injury, or death resulting from it only further emphasizes the risk to public safety this bill poses.

Repost : Yesterday, the gun violence prevention advocates I have been fighting alongside for nearly a decade honored me and two of my colleagues for our work in this arena. Representative David Meuse and former Mom’s Demand an action NH chapter leader, Deirdre Reynolds and I were honored with the GunSense NH Champion award.
The ceremony was held at the Guns To Gardens event in Concord. This is where gun owners who no longer want their fi****ms and also want them taken out of circulation can dismantle them and transform them into gardening tools, jewelry, community collages & wooden bowls. The symbolism of turning “swords into plowshares” is powerful. Thank you to Nancy Brown for organizing this empowering event.
For the past eight years I have served my Seacoast community, I have worked, with any one of any political persuasion who approaches this work in good faith, to enact gun violence prevention measures in NH. The one time we got extreme risk protection orders, expanded background checks gun free school zones and three day waiting periods passed through the House and Senate, our current governor vetoed them all. Since then we have had an increase in gun aided su***des, domestic violence with guns and a murder at NH Hospital. We don’t have to live like this, please pay attention to who gets your vote in this next election.

ICYMI: NH is moving forward with legislation in response to the NH Hospital shooting last year. The NH House passed HB 1711 by a margin of 204-149; next step is NH Senate.

Thank you to everyone who took action to support this bill, especially NH Hospital staff leaders Dr. Jeff Fetter and Dr. Samantha Swetter who bravely provided the heartbreaking but powerful testimony the committee needed to hear.

No matter which school our children go to, we all want them to come home safe from gun violence. But New Hampshire's laws have created murky territory when it comes to enforcing federal laws against guns in schools. Let's get it right this year. Waiting periods between the purchase and delivery of a firearm can save lives, but Senators who feel more loyalty to the corporate gun lobby than their constituents voted 14-9 on party lines to kill the bill. We’ll keep speaking out for this important su***de prevention measure.

NH Senators Bill Gannon and Howard Pearl vote against background checks because -- wait for it -- they don't know if their sons are felons, domestic abusers, or other prohibited persons and want to be able to give them a gun anyway.

We have so many questions, but there is NO question that background checks save lives by keeping fi****ms out of the hands of those who should not have them. We need to close background check loopholes NOW!

Background: This bill would have closed background check loopholes by requiring a background check for every firearm purchase and transfer -- with an exception for family and friends who know the other person is not prohibited from possessing or owning a firearm. Seems reasonable to us, but we also wouldn't put guns into the hands of people we don't know well enough to know whether they are prohibited gun owners.

NH Republican Senators who voted against closing background check loopholes:

Sen. Howard Pearl (Allenstown, Barnstead, Canterbury, Chichester, Deerfield, Epsom, Loudon, Northfield, Northwood, Nottingham, Pembroke, and Pittsfield)

Sen. Timothy Lang (Ashland, Belmont, Campton, Center Harbor, Gilford, Holderness, Laconia, Meredith, New Hampton, Sanbornton, Sandwich, and Thornton)

UPDATE: At least eight children are among the 22 people who were shot at the end of yesterday’s parade celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory. Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a mother of two who worked as a DJ at KKFI 90.1 FM, was killed. A friend of Lisa’s said she “was the most wonderful, beautiful person… She was a local DJ. She did everybody’s weddings. We all know her. She was so full of life.”

Our hearts are with Lisa’s loved ones and all impacted by yet another horrific act of mass gun violence in America.

Today marks the 11-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting tragedy. In the eleven years since, no significant federal gun violence prevention legislation has passed.

Americans continue to die in classrooms, movie theaters, grocery stores, places of worship, and more. Thoughts and prayers won’t bring them back but action will save lives and honor their memory.

Watch this new video from Newtown Action Alliance and other survivor groups, and urge both state and federal leaders to save lives by passing a set of comprehensive gun control laws, from an Assault Weapons Ban to Ethan’s Law to keep kids safe from unsecured guns.

Together, we can stop gun violence.

Thanks to everyone who came to our 2023 Gun Violence Prevention Summit! This crew is ready to grow our advocacy and make NH a state where we take meaningful steps to prevent gun violence through passing a package of strong bills.

12/06/2023

Thanks for this op-ed to Len, a long-standing member of the NH Gun Violence Prevention Coalition. We know that reporting to the NICS background check system is most effective when paired with universal background checks, which prevent prohibited persons from easily obtaining fi****ms without a background check at gun shows or during private sales from unlicensed sellers.

State legislators could also pass extreme risk protection orders, an important policy which provides families and law enforcement a process to temporarily remove fi****ms from those who are at significant risk of harming themselves or others, saving lives before gun violence occurs. Working together, we can strengthen public safety in our community and better support individuals most at risk for harm.

On November 30, 1993, President Bill Clinton signed into law the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, establishing a system of background checks for firearm purchasers. The legislation, colloquially known as the Brady Bill, brought about a significant shift in the way fi****ms are bought and sold in the United States.

What Happens to a School Shooter’s Sister? — The New Yorker 11/29/2023

On May 21, 1998, before places like Columbine and Newtown and Parkland had become part of the American vernacular, a school shooting in Oregon rocked the nation. Now, 25 years later, what can our country learn as we still grapple with providing adequate mental health support without stigma, while easy access to fi****ms continues to be rampant?
