Reflexes are more than the knee-jerk reaction we learned about in science class…

But I’ve found that parents of sensory kids are largely unaware of just how much retained primitive reflexes are affecting their kids’ behavior, coordination, moods, and independence skills.

Yet, sooooo many kids have retained reflexes. I’d argue more kids than ever.

Let’s look at a reflex that’s super common for kids with sensory issues, the Moro reflex, sometimes called the “startle” response, some signs of retention are shown below!

As therapists, we need to address our clients goals with immediate compensatory strategies whenever possible.

BUT, it’s critical that we also treat the root cause, and with reflexes on the brain stem level, they could just be the start of that root.
