The Wheel of Life and Focusing tools for Therapist and Clients
Workshop description
As therapists, dealing with the distress of individuals, couples and families is par-for-the-course. Given heightened economic, political, societal and cultural conflicts of the day, the ground beneath us can feel shakier than ever. Without a means for monitoring and maintaining balance, it can be easy to prioritize our work, clients, family, friends, and ignore ourselves in the process.
MFTs and mental health professionals need strategies for handling our own needs to prevent or limit the risk of burn out. The Wheel of Life and Focusing are such tools. Focusing guides us into the murky edges of inner wisdom, intuiting ways to move the needle toward greater life satisfaction, balance and well-being. The practice was developed by philosopher and psychologist Eugene Gendlen, whose research demonstrated that clients who were able to utilize Focusing achieved better therapeutic results. The Wheel of Life is a the common coaching and assessment tool.
Presenter
Carla Barrow, JD, LMFT is a licensed marriage & family therapist in Ft. Lauderdale and Plantation, FL committed to exploring what doesn’t work in relationships so we can restore ourselves to connection and creativity. While her work focuses primarily on couples , she also works with busy professionals, individuals and teens struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health challenges. As the Integral Therapist, Carla offers clients tools from her years of training and life experience, including Gottman Couples Therapy (Level 3), EFT for Couples, EMDR, Trauma Incidence Reduction, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Journaling. She has been an AV-rated commercial litigator since 1990 and served as a former Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida early in her career. For more than 25 years, she practiced litigation in a multitude of settings, including Big Law, boutique firms, the government, and as a solo practitioner, appearing before State, Federal and Bankruptcy courts. Carla volunteered as a grassroots lobbyist to end world hunger and poverty with RESULTS, served as a mentor for foster care youth, and participated as a board member of the Dade County Bar Association and Greater Miami Legal Services. Mid-life, after a six-week trial, she decided to pursue her dream to become a psychotherapist, integrating wisdom from years of workshops, yoga, journaling and therapy. She has developed into a new kind of counselor, one integrating the healing arts.
Workshop objectives
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to explore and discover:
1) Where we find themselves now in terms of self-care, satisfaction and well-being in eight key areas of life (career, finance, significant relationships, health, friends & family, fun & recreation, physical environment and spirituality/personal growth.
2) How to use the Wheel of Life for ourselves and with clients to identify levels of dissatisfaction and restore greater balance to life.
3) How a complementary, mindful practice called Focusing can be a practice for us and clients.
