Mats, bricks, belts, chairs, blankets, wall ropes, and more. We have B.K.S. Iyengar to thank for the props we see used in yoga studios throughout the world. He developed them to enable everyone -- regardless of physical condition -- to practice yoga. But he quickly discovered that even more advanced practitioners could benefit from them. Props are regularly used to bring freedom where there is stiffness and intelligence where there is dullness. They give the student a sense of direction and what is possible. Essentially, they help us develop higher levels of sensitivity that make transformation possible.

Anniversary is the date in which an event took place in a previous year. This could be a good event such as a wedding anniversary, a promotion, new house or anything with a reason for celebration. It can also be an event such as the beginning of a war or a traumatic accident or a loss or death. And still, an anniversary marks the date of an event whether good or bad.
Each year when the month of June approaches I have feelings of melancholy even teary for no apparent reason until I realize it is approaching the anniversary of my horse racing accident. This was the way an anniversary affected me each year and still does to some extent.
But now every year since 2013, when January 18 approaches I experience feelings of elation and pure joy. This was due to the Total Ankle Replacement that repaired the damage from that fateful day on June 6, 1985.
I am so grateful for the advances of modern medicine that made an ankle replacement possible. I am especially grateful for the ancient art and science of yoga that has kept me healthy in body, mind and spirit between the two anniversaries that mark these events of my life.
I once had a woman attend class for the first time. She filled out the registration form but didn't list any health concerns. During class she told me she injured her neck. After helping her with a few modifications in the poses that made her more comfortable I asked her how she injured herself. She said she was doing Instagram yoga. I never heard of such a thing..... but I guess it is.

Thanksgiving weekly classes will be focused on Restorative Poses. Yay!
Restorative Yoga is an essential part of a balanced practice and is much more than a 5 minute savasana at the end of class. This week's classes will improve your familiarity with Restorative Yoga techniques and methods based upon the Iyengar Yoga approach, which includes supported asanas, inversions, and pranayama. Modifications will be given for less experience and individual needs as usual.
