Ever spotted a mama with her calf in βs waters?
Donβt let her size fool you. The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) is gentle! βSea cowsβ as big as this protective mama are often seen floating through estuaries, rivers, and lagoons, as they graze on seagrass. Baby manatees like the prankster above will stay close to their mothers for up to two years.
βMy daughters lovingly call them βsweet potatoesβ and get so excited when we spot these peaceful giants in our waterways,β shares Amanda Prieto, Chief Programs Officer.
Interest in manatees peak during migration from October to March, when they migrate to warmer waters, making it a great time to inform neighbors about their threatened status. Manatees face threats like water pollution, habitat loss, and watercraft collisions, with few reaching their 60-year lifespan.

Think one person can't make a difference? Our for beg to differ. Check out what everyday heroes made possible last year:
β
Hauled away 2,500 lbs of trash (that's like 5 manatees!) ποΈ
β
Kept tabs on 27 water spots every. single. week. π¬
β
Raised a whopping $114,000+ for clean water.

Our lives and waterways are interconnected. Restoring the protects and our tap water!
As water flows through the Everglades, it undergoes natural filtration. However, after the area was drained, water now travels through man-made canals, which are less effective at filtering . These canals collect runoff from urban areas, impacting the bay.
Waterkeeper tests water at 33 locations to keep
informed about the region's water quality.
Stay tuned for next week's educational video.
