In Dr. Rhonda Trust's public speaking class, students recently explored the significance of “the self” in human communication. In a society where negative self-talk is common, the class focused on developing skills to enhance positive self-talk. 🗣️
The students participated in a “positivity plate” exercise, where each wrote a positive adjective for their classmates. By the end of the activity, each student had a “full plate” of affirmations highlighting their strengths and attributes, and they were encouraged to recite these positive words to themselves daily.
The exercise emphasized the power of self-talk and demonstrated how cultivating self-love and a positive self-image can improve daily communication and overall mental health.

It's one thing to visit Japan or the Czech Republic as a tourist, it's another to go and film a music video or documentary film. Many tourists visit England and France, but most haven't attended the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity or been invited to the London offices of the BBC, Edelman, and Sky News.
This past summer, these were some of the unforgettable academic and cultural experiences SoC students had across six countries! 🌍

The scenic Schloss Leopoldskron villa in Salzburg, Austria, immortalized in the film “The Sound of Music,” served as the venue for this year’s Salzburg Global Seminar, which drew about 70 students from across the world, 5 from the University of Miami, to discuss the future of communication under the theme “Belonging in the Age of Machines: Reimagining the Role of Media.”
“I like to call it a transformative experience that makes you aware as a communicator that you need to look into the motivations and the history and background of other people so that you can understand them better,” said faculty member Sanjeev Chatterjee.
“The most valuable thing was to be surrounded by people from so many different countries...I really enjoyed learning how people are raised differently, what is politically different in their country, how the situation in their country may change their views on media," shared Documentary, M.F.A. student Liana Barros.

This week, alumnus Derryl Barnes Jr. was honored with the 2024 Jim Nantz Award for Most Outstanding Collegiate Sportscaster at the 64th National Sports Media Association (NSMA) Awards Banquet! 🎉
Presented by Jon Chelesnik, CEO of Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA), Chelesnik stumbled across Barnes' demo last year and recalled thinking, "Whoa, who is this guy?...[he's] as talented on-camera as he is behind the editor."
In a surprise video, Jim Nantz told Barnes, “Your love and passion for this business and how hard you’ve worked to get where you are, and what you’ve already accomplished, it’s extraordinary.” Nantz remarked he hopes to be teammates with Barnes one day and that he's going to "sit back and watch [Barnes'] career soar.”
Barnes, the first African American recipient of the Jim Nantz award, thanked the audience and emphasized, “It’s a surreal feeling to be recognized in a room full of pioneers.”
