My name is Kate Sparks, and I've been a stylist here in Corona, CA, for the last 12 years.

My specialty is in hair extensions that look flawlessly natural or boldly vibrant.

I also love getting my hands on clients who are looking to change up their color or try something new!

I'm currently an educator with on behalf of . I teach classes all over CA, NV, and AZ.

When I'm not behind the chair, I'm at home enjoying life with my wonderful husband and the best daughter a girl could ask for. They both are just the light of my life.

Does your hair get dry and brittle this time of year?

If you’re spending a lot of time in the sun, you might notice your hair becoming more dry, brittle, and damaged. But why is that?

Your hair shaft is filled with keratin (protein). Prolonged exposure to the sun weakens the protein structure, sucks out moisture, and reduces elasticity so your hair breaks more
easily. Pair that with wind, humidity, chlorine, or saltwater and you have a recipe for brittle and damaged hair!

So how do you avoid damaging your hair this summer?

•Wear a hat when you plan to spend a lot of time in the sun!

•Add moisturizing products to your routine to replenish your hair’s moisture loss and restore your hair’s elasticity.

•Before swimming, wet your hair with unchlorinated water and apply a mask or leave in conditioner. This will help your hair not suck up as much chlorine or salt water and create a
barrier for your hair.

But I actually encourage my blonde clients to add some lowlights during the summer, too!

Why you might ask? Because this time of year a lot of my clients have been spending a lot of time outside in the sun. All the sun exposure tends to brighten and lighten their hair causing them to lose dimension.

Dimension and depth help your blondes to pop, your hair to grow in more seamless, and for clients wanting a more lived-in look - dimension and depth is a must!

It's not all sunshine and rainbows over here! I know I talk about how much I love my job a lot...because I
truly do!

But I think it's important to not just post the highlight reel on social media. Not everyday is perfect and there are aspects of every job that aren't super enjoyable.

I wanna keep it real with you and share the parts of my job
that can be difficult...

1. My back. Spending all day with my arms up or bent over a shampoo bowl can take a real toll on my back. (Ibuprofen is my bestie some nights!)

2. No shows. It always bums me out when people don't show up to their appointments.

3. Two words: Folding towels.

Even though these aspects of being a hairstylist aren’t all sunshine and rainbows, hanging out with my clients and making them feel their best makes it all worth it!

HAIR MYTH: I'm busting this bad hair myth once and for all!

Have you ever been told to show up to your color appointment
with dirty hair?

The idea of coming to your color service with dirty hair goes back to the days when color products were very harsh compared to the gentle colors we have today.

A bit of natural oil on the scalp kept the tingling and staining to a minimum. This was especially important with bleaching services, which could be quite irritating to the scalp.

Fast forward to now, and many clients (and even stylists) believe that the dirtier the hair, the better the color.

But here's the truth!

Haircolor takes best to clean, freshly washed hair. I recommend washing your hair 12 to 24 hours before your color. This will assure the hair is clean, but allow the oil in your scalp to create a protective barrier against irritation and staining!

With that being said, avoid aggressively scratching or scrubbing
your scalp. Broken skin or scratches will definitely burn or tingle with color or bleach.
