Do you know the reason that Denim Day started?
In 1992 in Italy, an 18 year old girl was r***d by her 45 year old driving structor who was later convicted and sentenced to a lesser charge of indecent exposure. The prepetrator appealed to the Italian Supreme Court, which overturned the conviction in a 1998 decision that indicated since the survivor's jeans were very tight she must have consented. The "jeans alibi" was used to argue that since the jeans were so tight, the only way to have gotten them off was if the survivor aided her attacker in removing her jeans, thus making the act consensual. Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliment launched into immediate action and protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Italian Parliment building. This was the beginning of what has become a worldwide event and movement to wear jeans as a visible means of protest to against misconceptions that surround s*xual assault.
Today on Denim Day, wear denim to help bring awareness and combat the idea that r**e and s*xual violence are the fault or responsibility of survivors. Clothing is not consent.
CARDV is grateful for all that the Pacific Power Foundation does!
