What an amazing trip for our seniors! During their class trip to Puerto Rico, the Class of 2024 enjoyed zip-lining, snorkeling, and delicious cuisine. In addition to experiencing the history and architecture of this beautiful and tropical island, the students enjoyed a memorable visit to the a developing PK to grade 4 school on the west side of the island. Their students were enamored with our seniors and the feeling was mutual. It was an emotional goodbye.
Our soon-to-be graduates ask themselves: How can I make a difference in the world? They read Thoreau and learn about the American Transcendentalists, they study Climate Change and Sustainability. To be able to venture out of the classroom to experience the world and to become immersed in another community and culture is truly a gift. What an adventure, Class of 2024!
Grade 6 students studied Business Math this spring. A portion of this block included the creation of small businesses - the students were tasked with designing and manufacturing products to sell at our May Faire “marketplace”. All of the proceeds from this effort were donated to Children’s Hospital Orange County (the recipient was enthusiastically chosen by the students themselves). Denise Ogawa from CHOC made a special visit to campus today to collect this generous donation from the class. What a beautiful moment for us all!

Three Kings Day at WSOC! Our seniors traveled the campus, sharing a song, delivering messages and receiving gifts from grades and early childhood classes. Three Kings Day, celebrating the arrival of the kings to bring gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ child, marks the end of the holiday season. The day commemorates the arrival of hope and charity in the world. According to folklore, in exchange for their gifts, the kings received the blessings of enjoyment, love and peace.
Wet on wet water color utilizes liquid paint, which Rudolf Steiner referred to as ‘liquid color,’ on heavy paper which is pre-soaked in water. This creates an effect where the colors run across the page and blend into one another. In the early years of Waldorf education this style of painting is used to explore the nature of each color and what happens when two colors blend together. Steiner felt that this style of painting supports the child in their ‘dream consciousness’.Learning about colors through this style of painting encourages the child to have an inner experience of the colors. The child develops a deep understanding of how mixing two certain colors together creates another one. Children who have learned to paint in this way rarely have issues remembering which two primary colors create a particular secondary one – they have lived through the experience and the knowledge lives within them.
The act of painting develops fine motor skills. It does so through the holding of the handle, the moving of the brush across the page, and the careful act of dipping it into the water and paint. Painting nourishes the sense of sight through exposing the child to rich and varied colors.

The KQED Mindshift article, "How Movement and Gestures Can Improve Student Learning," by Deborah Farmer Kris states:“It takes a fair amount of mental bandwidth to keep our bodies still because we’re meant to be in a kind of state of constant motion. And to control your impulse to move – especially for children – uses up some of the mental resources that they could otherwise apply to their learning.”
As Henry David Thoreau wrote, “the moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow.”

Movement is a key to success in an academic environment, and Waldorf education provides a dynamic classroom environment that supports how children learn.
As current research has shown, the practice of "looping," or keeping a class and a main lesson teacher together through multiple grades, has multiple benefits in learning and in life. A class becomes a family, with lifelong connections that support our students well into adulthood.

The exceptional tale of Milo, Tock and a certain magic tollbooth was brought to life on stage by Grade 6 in "The Phantom Tollbooth" (adapted from Norton Juster's beloved children's book). Even surrounded by dozens of toys, Milo is bored. Nothing interests him at all. The Phantom Tollbooth comes to the rescue! Transported to the Land of Wisdom, Milo is thrust into adventure when told Princesses Rhyme and Reason need rescuing to bring peace between two kings. They are divided over which is more important: words or numbers. Knee-deep in danger, language and math along the way, Milo learns everything has a purpose. Upon his return home, he realizes there is never a reason to be bored in a world full of so many things to discover.
