VU MSN Alumni, Danika Degroot, published her thesis research along with her advisor, Dr. Annette Callis, Director of Graduate Nursing in the Dec 2022 issue of the Journal of Emergency Nursing. This study provides meaningful evidence that role delineation in patient arrest situations increased effectiveness in code teamwork and therefore has the potential to improve patient care outcomes if implemented as a practice standard.

Congratulations to one of our August 2022 MSN alumni, Deborah Yoon RN, MSN, OCN, Oncology Nurse Navigator at St Jude Crosson Cancer Institute. Deborah's abstract, "Infusion Nurses’ Personal Protective Equipment Use While Handling Chemotherapy Drugs," has been accepted for a podium presentation at the Western Institute of Nursing’s 56th Annual Communicating Nursing Research Conference in April 2023. Here is her photo with her advisor and Director of Graduate Nursing Programs, Dr Annette Callis.

I had the privilege of presenting our research on the Impact of Moral Injury on Self-reported Work Performance in Nurses at CACNS (California Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists) Conference this month held at the University of San Diego. This provides excellent evidence for the continued development of Care Programs for Nurses in an effort to support Nurse Well-being and promote optimal patient care outcomes.

Vanguard University pantry program helps students, their families fight hunger during COVID-19 Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County is one of the few food banks that's stayed opened throughout the pandemic. Vanguard University students have stepped in as volunteers, making sure they help feed their community.

Vanguard University Nursing Professor, Dr Jade Kay

Education and science have always been a calling in Dr. Jade Kay’s life. Her father worked primarily for Kaiser Permanente analyzing X-rays and ultrasound while her mother was an elementary school teacher until she retired.

Born in the Philippines, Jade and her family immigrated to Long Beach, CA. She describes her time growing up there: “I was a total nerd my whole life and always enjoyed reading, participating in science labs and going to class. In the Philippines, I was educated in English so it wasn’t a hard transition.”

Eventually she would graduate from UCLA with her masters of science in nursing and meet her now husband in a cover band called “South Coast Rhythm” where she was the lead singer and he played the saxophone. After trying to have a child, they adopted their daughter from her home country who is now 7 years old.

Dr. Mary Wickman, Professor and Director of the Nursing Department pictured here with a few students after today’s White Coat Ceremony, kicks off our new Faculty Friday series.

We recently caught up with her as she shared about how she first got into Nursing. She says, “it was a leap pf faith, a calling from God that set me on a path that was challenging, rewarding, exciting, fulfilling, and diverse. It was the best decision I ever made.”

After graduating from Mount Saint Mary’s University in LA, she served as a Naval Officer for 21 years eventually retiring as a Captain. You can read more about her story by clicking on University News in our link in bio.
