As more companies move production and sourcing closer to home, it adds a new dynamic to procurement. This article shares a few interesting perspectives not often talked about near/on shoring.

One is, is it making the supply chain more complicated as opposed to its goal of simplification? Companies are not completely getting rid of their offshore supply chain, so adding another source of supply at home may just be adding to the complication in the supply chain.

New Solutions for Battling Counterfeit Components 04/23/2024

The always-present risk of procuring counterfeit electronic components was exacerbated during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. A recent survey of industry experts found 87 percent of 93 respondents said counterfeit components were a major or significant concern. And 88 percent of the respondents said a counterfeit component in electronic assemblies would cost in excess of $50,000.

With China heading into difficult economic times in 2024 and with reduced microchip manufacturing, formerly employed workers with component manufacturing or sales experience may be tempted to apply those skills toward counterfeiting components.

BREAKING NEWS: Will Taiwan’s 7.4 Earthquake Affect Chip Production?

The earthquake that struck Taiwan on Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024, measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale, stands as the most significant seismic event to jolt the nation in a quarter-century. Fortunately, the casualties appear to be minimal compared to the devastating 1999 quake, which claimed over 2000 lives.

Taiwan, a focal point of the recent chip shortage, garnered global attention as it became evident that the island housed the largest wafer manufacturer, TSMC. While TSMC's facilities endured tremors, most were situated in areas of low impact. With thorough assessment, it is hoped that the wafer fabs will soon reopen, and production will return to normal levels. Notably, TSMC isn't the sole manufacturer in Taiwan, and some are situated in regions more severely affected by the quake.

This article segments numerous Taiwanese electronics manufacturers based on their proximity to the epicenter and provides updates on their current operational status.
