An amazing result for our wrestling team at Newport Harbor. These kids have been working hard over the last year to turn the program around and put themselves on the state and national map. This is the first big folk style tournament of the season, and the team shined with:
🥇Anthony Manno
⭐️6 Medalists (Top 8)
🔟th out of the 245 teams

Congrats to all of the Athletes and their hard work paying off

Congrats to all of the great coaches and role models in their lives that push and support them to make their dreams and reality. This is only the beginning of great things to come!

I just came here to say that the best things in my life have come to me through hard work, sacrifice and discipline. I’ve suffered greatly throughout my life in so many ways. But mostly all those struggles have lead me to the absolute best people in my life… and aside from the skills and strengths that I’ve acquired along the way, nothing beats the deep and meaningful relationships that I have formed in the wake of those struggles.

Thank you to everyone in my life that has continued to inspire and challenge me to push hard every day to become a better version of myself. Today marks another milestone.

Plan A
To imagine the type of mentality it would take for a young athlete to go from a bench warmer in his first season of Pop Warner, all of the way to playing in the NFL is something that only a few will ever understand. Jarrett Patterson’s story could have went down so many different paths. But that was solely up to him.

The story began with his older brother David Jr. Never having played tackle football before, he and his father David Sr. began by looking for a way to pack on a ton of size and strength to earn a starting position on the O-Line as a sophomore at Woodbridge High School. After a few months at ECWC we packed on 20-30 lbs onto his frame and it became so. He out-muscled the senior athlete in front of him and began an amazing career on the gridiron. After 3 more years of busting his ass, he earned a scholarship to play at Fresno State and had an amazing 5 year career starting Offensive Tackle for the Bull Dogs!

Along came Jarrett… He immediately saw the possibilities of how far he could take his dream. And to be straight, he only had one plan, the NFL.

To say that Jarrett is hard working and disciplined would be a massive understatement. He was and still is uncompromisingly stubborn and dogged in his mindset in reaching his goals. He held himself to a standard that can only be found in the greatest of super humans. ECWC is well known for producing this type of athlete. The amount of pain and suffering that has been endured under our roof is off the charts. To know this type of affliction, you would have to train on our strongman competition team or our professional MMA fighter training. This is the exact mentality that Jarrett held himself to since I began working with him in Middle School.

He would come every single week after grueling practices regardless of how sore or banged up he was. He was the last person to leave the gym at night and the first person at the gym on Sunday mornings to make sure he was there for the hardest day of his week. His workouts included Olympic lifting, strength training, sprinting, plyometrics, speed-strength work, conditioning and strongman training including our famous “Death Medley”.

At over 300 lbs, he jumped and sprinted better than athletes 1/2 his size. This is not something that he was born with, it is something that he earned through the 5000+ hours he spent in the gym forging himself into the superhuman he needed to be. He made so many pancakes at Mission Viejo, he earned himself a 4-star recruiting tag by his Junior year (should have been 5).

When Mission Viejo played Mater Dei in the CIF playoffs, I watched Mater Dei overwhelm Mission Viejo with their shear volume of great players in every part of the field except for the kid playing Left Tackle. That battle they would lose down after down. He was the best player on the field that day regardless of the outcome and he earned that personal victory by outworking, out resting, out eating and out studying everyone on that field. In fact, the 2 Captains on Mater Dei’s football team who were also the hardest working and most respected members of their team were Jarrett’s training partners (Nate White & Dean Neeley). It was an amazing sight to see them all out there together.

After his senior year, he had many offers to play D1 football from UCLA, Michigan, Auburn, ASU, Oregon, USC Notre Dame and more…

He settled on a dream to play for Notre Dame. There he would play Offensive Tackle in his first year and would move on to play Center for 3 years after that. In order to give his team the best chance at winning, he unselfishly moved to Guard in his final year with the Fighting Irish. At Notre Dame, he battled through injuries and set backs that would make 99% of athletes give up. He was in the gym the day after surgery, multiple times to keep things moving forward regardless of his limitations. He never wavered, he never despaired, he just kept his focus. There was never a Plan B.

Regardless of these setbacks, he never allowed a single sack his entire college career and dominated every player in front of him. He was ranked the #1 Center his Junior year and the #1 Guard his Senior year. He was also named team Captain at Notre Dame his final 2 years and would be the last player to walk out of the famous tunnel in his final home game at South Bend.

In April 2023, he was drafted by the Texans and is now one of the 0.016% of the draft-eligible NCAA football players to play in the history of the NFL. I am so proud of the man he has become and I am excited to watch him take his dream as far as he possibly can.

Congrats to on her excellent performance hitting the podium in her second competition this year. She won the truck pull in the Middleweights and had the second best time overall out of the MW and HW pro divisions. Look for big things in her future as she continues to refine her movement and climb her way to the top of the strongman food chain.

Offensive linemen don't get any of the glory, and they normally don't want it. If a player at that position is being spotlighted, it's normally because they did something wrong.

In this case, Notre Dame interior offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson has done a ton of things right in his career in South Bend, and the team captain returns to the Fighting Irish with a chance to help lead an offensive front that could be a team strength.

The three-year starter returns for a fifth and final season, and the rugged center is exactly what you want at a player in his position. Though the Irish will have young players alongside him (besides fellow graduate senior Josh Lugg), they are super-talented, and veteran line coach Harry Hiestand returns after a coaching the Chicago Bears' offensive line in 2018-19 to lead the way.

Patterson had to think his development would be enhanced by learning under Hiestand for a year. With new coach Marcus Freeman starting his program in the shadow of Touchdown Jesus, Patterson clearly wanted to be a part of it.

Patterson is a leader, a valuable piece of the offense and will be the kind of cornerstone around which the Irish can build. Centers aren't normally high-round draft picks, but Patterson could have been a Day 2 pick a season ago.

He has the chance to improve his stock even more while he tries to lead Notre Dame back to the College Football Playoff.

This past Saturday marked the 20th Anniversary of California’s Strongest Man and the 12th year in Huntington Beach. This is the first year that we have attempted a full Live Stream event on the beach after experimenting with the COVID edition of CSM 2021 at ECWC. We had competitors from Sacramento to San Diego to Rancho Cucamonga, Nevada, Arizona, Maryland, Italy, Denmark and France to vie for the title. The highlight of the show was BIG Pro Strongwoman - Nadia Stowers winning her 1st California’s Strongest title and becoming the first woman to ever pick up and walk with the Nasty ECWC 250 lb Farmer’s Tanks for roughly 30 ft!!!

In the heavyweight men’s class, it was a dominant victory for Joe Mass, taking the overall win and only 1 of 2 heavyweights to platform the 400 lb stone. Tucson, AZ native - Troy Shanks pulled out the second place spot with a gutsy win in the truck pull. Taylor Dutcher was the last man to hit the podium with a consistent performance across all events. Big Sac (Chico) vegan strongman - Miles Huffman took the win in the 300 lb Farmer Tanks for 130 ft. with a time of 31 secs. David Locklin of Fontana making his debut at CSM this year knocked out 9 reps on the 300 on Log press for the “W”.

In the Men’s Middleweight class, ECWC Strongman - Blake Hoffman put out a great performance after only training strongman for a year winning his 1st California’s Strongest Man title, joining a long list of great competitors.

Blake stayed consistent all day long in his placing across all of the events. He was forced to throttle back his output due to nursing a calf strain, but managed to form a healthy 5.5 pt lead going into the final event with an easy win in the truck pull.

The field was tough with 2019 CSM Champ - Andrew Mock coming off of a major knee surgery 9 months prior but still demonstrating the grit and shrewdness to win the keg toss and atlas stones to pull off second place. Kyle Gerrans rounded out the podium with 3 top 3 finishes in 5 events, demonstrating his athleticism and well–roundedness.

Tucson, AZ Native - Joe Young took the 275 lb Log Press event with 10 reps and taking the fourth spot overall in the Middleweight category. CSM veteran and Big Sac (Chico) competitor Joel Snodgrass joined his Tofu Teammate to capture the win in the Farmer Tank event with a blazing time of 30 secs.

In the lightweight class, Mike Gonzalez demonstrated his mettle and experience taking 2 event wins in the Farmers Walk and Atlas stones to edge out Richard Panganiban by 0.5 pts for the overall win. Ricky took 2 event wins himself in both the 245 lb log, banging out 10 reps and in the keg toss being the only lightweight to chuck the 4th keg over the standards. Aaron Talavera finished in the 3rd spot to claim the bronze finishing top 3 in 4 events.

The Open woman’s category was quite the dominant spectacle, as MW Pro - Nadia Stowers won 4 out of 5 events starting the show off with 16 reps on the 155 lb log press. Finishing in 2nd place in a very tight race, Cassie Moore took 2nd place in 3 out of 5 events finishing 1 point ahead of Sami Ridge who managed to dominate the truck pull event with an amazing pull of 65 ft, with the next closest pull of 37 ft by Nadia Stowers.

In the lightweights, Deanna Flores grabbed her first title with 5 out of 5 event wins. Stacy Diemert showed off her toughness throughout the day pushing Deanna in the Farmers Walk and the truck pull.

A production like California’s Strongest Man / Woman would not be possible without the amazing team at ECWC. The show has so many elements that require an extreme amount of competent manpower. ECWC has accumulated 9 Pro cards over the years and with that comes decades of experience and that’s what truly makes this contest run the way it does. It also makes the contest fun and exciting for both the competitors and the audience.

Thanks to my judges Chris Burke, Liefia Ingalls and Jacob Finerty for keeping the divisions running fast and fair. Thanks to Freak Factory grip troll - Ralphy Sulsona for always being there through thick and thin.

A special thanks goes to my field manager/technician - Joe Wells, thanks for all of the problem solving and keeping the show moving seamlessly. Huge props to our spotters and loaders - Big Mike Nolan, Brandon Ultra Wilcox, Mark Konen, Nate Garcia, Chris Carradus, Zyad and Alex Hage. The amount of work that these guys do over 2 days from loading/unloading and in between events is off the charts.

Adam Lewis and Gracie Garcia - We tested out the Live Stream capabilities at CSM 2021 and Adam felt that we would be able to pull it off at the beach. Through a few power and WiFi issues, we kept our cool and pulled it off and that is due to these two amazing strongman tech geeks. Marcus Aurelius would be proud. Here’s the link to the Live Stream replay:

https://youtu.be/co_QX4Z8z18

Olivia Grace came in strong and did a great job in her first year as scorekeeper. Thanks to Frankie Ortiz, Amy Liew and Ralphy for the fast and accurate scoring. Also thanks to Dione and Strongman Corps - Bill for handling the membership and getting the preliminary checks done earlier in the week.

Thanks to all of our ECWC / Blizzard crew for their unwavering support through the years. ECWC is a special place and much of that is due to all of the amazingly talented, intelligent and creative skills of our gym family. Thanks to Sebastian & Jennifer for pitching in, Ben Moreland for jumping in on timer.

Athena McCandlish is the pre-game MVP of CSM. She organized the venue and brought in all of the great vendors/prizes that we give to our winners. She takes a huge stress off my shoulders and I’m so grateful to have her on my team. This year the top competitors won $100 in gift certs from Cerberus and Unbreakable Gear, barbell collars from Lock Jaw, a case of Proballer Energy Drink and Deadly Trophy Swords from ECWC Strength!

Highland Games World Champion / Francis Brebner is the MAN behind the mic and the most amazing voice in strength sports and a great friend. Thanks for always teaming up as we continue to grow strength sports in Southern California. Fun video of Francis tossing cabers: https://youtu.be/ApseIKXdtno

Big Thanks to Dr.Sebastian at The Performance Place for taking care of the athletes. You and your staff are such an amazing resource to both ECWC athletes and CSM!
https://www.p2sportscare.com/

Thanks to CalTime Metals for getting the standards working again. They looked and worked great.

Thanks to Val Trullinger for getting the memorial poster art together. It will forever hang on the wall at ECWC to remember our brothers in strength - DJ Chuck LaMantia and Chris Daly❤️

Thanks to Kellie, Charlie Jr and DJ Chuck’s family for coming out to support one of Chuck’s favorite places to be where he merged his passions and made our show and the environment full of energy and strongman joy.

Thanks to our great friends - Odd Haugen, Martins Licis, Jacob Finerty, Mike Gillert and Romark Weiss for coming out to support our great sport and inspiring the competitors during the show.💪

Extra special thanks to Sherri Fontes for all
of the hard work pre/post-contest and for organizing the competitors and manning the CSM/ECWC apparel tent to help offset the high costs of this show.
