UNG Faculty Member Adam Frey conducting the Gala Concert of the 21st annual International Euphonium Tuba Festival with more than 150 participants and faculty from around the world. The event is open to players of all ages. Next year's event will be June 15-21, 2025. ietfestival.com

Students in Sinfonietta, which is the UNG string orchestra, marched in the parade at Gold Rush Days on October 19. Their participation was organized by Sinfonietta director Prof. Lauren McCombe, who rehearsed the group in a program of fiddle tunes. Music Education major Maggie Mosley, who plays violin in Sinfonietta, recruited her Pick & Bow fiddle students to participate as well! Sinfonietta won the trophy for "Best Band of 2024." You can hear Sinfonietta in concert on November 21 at 7:30 pm in Shott Auditorium.

Nine students enrolled in Music History III presented their original research at the Research on Contemporary Composition (ROCC) Conference on the last weekend in October. The conference participants included music researchers and composers from all over the United States. ROCC, which is now in its eighth year, is hosted by the Department of Music and provides an international forum for the exchange of art and ideas. The program includes research presentations, performances, and guest artist recitals.

The UNG Music Department partnered with Georgia Pick & Bow Traditional Music School to bring celebrated roots musicians Evie Ladin and Keith Terry to campus for a workshop and concert on October 12. In the workshop, UNG and Pick & Bow students played and danced alongside one another as they learned how to accompany, call, and perform traditional southern square dances. The concert welcomed community members for a rare opportunity to hear Ladin and Terry, who are about to embark on a European tour.

All three choral ensembles will be performing, so come hear the University Singers, Le Belle Voci, and Patriot Choir. The singers have been working hard to present a concert highlighting music about the journey through life. The performance is free to the public. Join us tonight, Thursday, October 10, 2024 at 7:30PM, the UNG Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will present an evening of music representing many diverse musical styles and cultures. One of the highlights of the program will be …and then the Universe exploded by Olivia Kieffer, a native of Georgia, which is a joyful representation of the end of the world, complete with a battle of the bands and a countdown to the end. Also on the program is the classic wind band piece When Jesus Wept by William Schuman featuring outstanding student soloists on trumpet and euphonium. The evening will conclude with John Phillip Sousa’s Black Horse Troop, which celebrates its centennial as it was completed in 1924. This classic march will be played by the combination of both bands. The members of the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic band are UNG undergraduates representing a wide variety of majors. Both ensembles are under the direction of Dr. J. Ashley Jarrell. Admission is free for this 7:30 p.m. concert which will take place in the Dawson County Performing Arts Center 1665 Perimeter Rd. Dawsonville, GA 30534. Join us tonight in Gainesville (and tomorrow night in Dahlonega) as The A Little Night(hawk) Music kicks off the 2024-2025 season with a performance by Dr. Sanghie Lee entitled “It’s a love story.” The program will explore the love story between Schumann and his wife Clara, who was the daughter of his piano teacher, Friedrich Wieck. Their love was met with severe opposition by her father, and Clara and Robert could not see each other and rarely communicated. During their separation, Robert threw himself into composing and she became the greatest inspiration for his work. The program will feature Schumann’s Fantasy in C Major and Piano Concerto in A minor, which famously contains Clara’s name hidden within the musical notes themselves. Performances will be on Monday, October 7 (Performing Arts Center, UNG Gainesville Campus) and Tuesday, October 8 (Shott Performance Hall, UNG Dahlonega Campus). Both performances are at 7:30pm and are free to the public. The Crown Mountain Trio, featuring UNG's esteemed music faculty, takes the stage tonight October 1, 2024 in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Formed in 2023, this award-winning ensemble – comprised of Dr. Philip Snyder (cello), Ms. Yeasol Kang (violin), and Ms. Mengyao Sun (piano) – winners of the 2024 Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition, has captivated audiences across the Southeast.

The concert will feature a centennial celebration performance of Rhapsody in Blue, along with other Gershwin favorites, including Strike Up the Band, Summertime, and I Got Rhythm. Dr. Chapman is the Senior Professor of Music at the University of North Georgia, having joined the faculty in 1983. In November 2023, he was named Teacher of the Year by the Georgia Music Teachers Association.
