It’s the perfect weather for a ’Tiny Umbrella!’ Have you tried Symbol Brewing Company July release?
Tiny Umbrella - 7.5% ABV, 5 IBU
We brewed up a perfect storm, inspired by a hurricane cocktail.
Unleash the tropical storm in your tastebuds with Tiny Umbrella. Passionfruit, citrus, and notes of pomegranate swirl within this unique beery concoction. A balance of sweet and sour, fruit and malt, warming alcohol and refreshment.
Find yourself whisked away to a beachside luau with this summer infusion. Wind in your hair, sand between your toes, and of course, a tiny umbrella in your glass.
Live music starts at 7 pm tonight featuring Songbird Jones and Tejas BBQ Coalition will be here!
This week’s small batch is Man-chew-way (Mantua).
You can still hear the old-timers trying to teach the newbies to this area how to say the name of the old town, and the housing development of the same name, today. It is not “Man-chew-uh” but should be pronounced as “Man-chew-way”. Get it straight!
The original town of Mantua was founded in 1854 just 4 miles north of present-day Anna. Its founders purchased 200 acres from Scott McKinney of which 25 were set aside for what would become the town of Mantua. The founders divided those 25 acres into 48 city blocks around a town square. In those early days, the town prohibited vices like gambling, horse racing, and even the selling of liquor to create a more appropriate environment for a seminary that was planned to be built.
The town of Mantua was home to a variety of businesses, industries, and residents. The town’s first house of worship was built between 1855 and 1857, and it stood until 1871 when a larger church was needed. There was a tanning mill, a grist mill, a post office, and numerous retail businesses, but never any saloons. By October of 1858, construction had begun on the seminary, and the first classes were held in 1860. Offering a variety of courses, the seminary had 80 students by 1868. By 1870 the town had grown from around 50 residents to 300.
Mantua persisted until the Houston and Texas Central Railway laid tracks some two miles to the east. In 1872, when the tracks were complete, many of the former residents of Mantua formed the new town of Van Alstyne along the newly laid tracks. By 1873, Mantua was practically a ghost town, and by the early 1880s, the seminary held its final classes. Mail service was discontinued on July 11, 1873.
Footnote: The original town of Mantua was on the east side of Highway 75. The housing development and old Mantua water tower are not indicative of where the original town stood. The water tower was moved to the west side of Highway 75 in recent history.

Local historian Chester A. Howell compiled a brief history of Anna for inclusion in a book that was given to those who attended the Anna Homecoming in 1985. Until recently, it was the most authoritative and complete description of Anna’s history. In his own words, Chester Howell was “born, reared, and schooled in Anna”. Mr. Howell details the growth of Anna during the late 1800s through the end of the 20th century.
The Spark that Ignited the Town of Anna is a 484-page resource published in 2018. It offers great insight into the train depot, information, and location of historical homes as well as communities and cemeteries in Anna. However, Chester Howell’s book was the first published personal account of the growth of Anna. He wrote this wonderful book, and now a PDF file is available online, from his personal experience about the town he grew up and lived in.
