We had another successful chicken harvest on our farm! Thank you and others for all of your help today. We couldn’t have done it without you!
These broilers are 6 weeks old and looking great! With all this rain you can really see the immediate impact they are having on the pasture!

What a ride 2023 has been on the Scalfetti Farm! From settling into our new digs to cultivating memories that’ll last a lifetime, it’s been a year bursting with growth and adventure. Apologies for the delay in our usual newsletter – keeping up with all the excitement took precedence! But fear not, dear homestead fam, we’re back and ready to share the highlights of our journey with you.

Yesterday, Rachael and I had our annual deep-dive goal setting and planning session. Dedicating the whole day to the process to ensure that 2024 is a year filled with purpose and achievement.
Our goals span six key areas:
Family: Goals focused on our immediate family of four.
Relationships: Centered on building and nurturing connections beyond our immediate family, encompassing extended family and friends.
Personal: Embracing self-care, fitness, nutrition, and personal achievements.
Professional: Aligned with our individual career aspirations.
Financial: Geared toward our personal financial objectives.
Homestead: Addressing goals for our homestead and farm.
Once our goals were shaped and aligned, we turned our attention to the annual calendar. Renumbering it for 2024, and adding holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and all the known commitments.
With a holistic view of our goals and the months ahead, we strategized our focus for each season. Beginning with fixed events like family vacations and the APPPA conference, we progressed to substantial commitments like raising a batch of broilers, ensuring we time it just right to avoid clashes with other plans. Month by month, we laid out events, projects, and tasks to give ourselves the best shot at achieving our goals for the year.
Drawing lessons from the past year's experiences, where plans often got reshuffled in the latter half, we adjusted our approach. This time, we detailed the first quarter meticulously and added only crucial items for the rest of the year. Quarterly planning sessions scheduled throughout the year will keep us on track, allowing flexibility to adapt to life's surprises and capitalize on unexpected opportunities.

Did you know the turkeys in the top photo are considered free range by the USDA simply because they’re not confined to a cage? By harvest time, they’ll have hardly enough room to move, and the only sunlight they’ll ever see is on the way to the slaughterhouse.
Our turkeys truly get to LIVE a full turkey-life for their whole existence and that's something to be thankful for! Chasing bugs, stretching in the warm sun, eating acorns and grasses; with plenty of room to explore, exercise and express their natural instincts and behaviors.
Don't be misled by terms that have no gravitas. Ordering your food from real, local, family-operated farms brings a level of true transparency that can't be reproduced any other way.

Added 2 lines of electrics wire attached to the
I got tired of moving the electric netting around all summer and the limitations it gave us at the “edges” of the pasture. I hope this provides enough protection from predators and makes our chores a little easier.
We have a few eight legged friends helping out at the green house! I love seeing these Zipper spiders in the garden!
A swing and a miss with the new nest box. Hopefully these eggs will show our ladies where I want them to lay… otherwise we will move to more drastic measures. Any suggestions to retrain our birds to their new nest box are welcome!
Today marks a monumental day! According to Rachael Rossetti by hanging these lights, she is officially considering our remodel complete!!! It’s only been 2 years but we are done!!!
We liked how well these roll away nest boxes are working in our chicken tractor, we added a set to our chicken run!
It has begun! The girls are laying a lot of eggs now!!!!
