Acupuncture points prompt chemical changes at a cellular level that modulate the immune system and
support hormone balance. They function as conduits of electrical energy that help to correct imbalance or blockages in the flow of energy (Qi). Stimulating the connective tissue of the body through the acupuncture
points decreases chronic inflammation and reduces pain!

You don’t know what you don’t know.

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It’s recognizing what others have to share through their human experience in a balance of give and receive that creates community and belonging.

Accepting help is also a gift to someone else who harbors great joy in seeing you succeed and thrive.

Where does the brain go during an acupuncture session?

I often hear clients say they are neither asleep nor fully meditating but in an in between like state that feels somehow like both. The needles trigger this response from the body and brain allowing deep rest, transformation, and healing.

Allergies have been coming in hot with the change in seasons!

With clients, I address allergies by treating both local areas of stagnation like sinus tension and headaches alongside working with underlying patterns leading to inflammatory responses.

No treatment is the same as each person is different. For some, herbs may be a great addition to support their immune system and for others acupuncture just may be the ticket to reset, recharge, and clear out those nasal passages.

The HPA axis plays an important role in the body’s response to stress and supports communication between the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal glands.

When activated, the pathway of the HPA axis results in the production of cortisol which increases sugars (glucose) in the bloodstream.

When the nerves that regulate the HPA axis are activated, a healthy response to stress is characterized by a quick rise in cortisol levels which decline when the stressful situation ends. Prolonged periods of stress can lead to HPA axis dysfunction and over stimulation leading to feelings of irritability, fatigue, depression and overwhelm, alongside low immunity, pain and weight gain.

Our bodies are not meant to be in a chronic state of stress because it disrupts the normal circadian rhythm of the release of cortisol along the HPA axis which can lead to long standing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, menstrual irregularities, insomnia, muscle weakness and cardiovascular disease.

Acupuncture exerts a powerful homeostatic effect to help regulate this axis by relieving excessive excitation of the HPA axis due to chronic stress alongside positively altering brain chemistry to support optimal physical and emotional well being.

We are all connected even down to the smallest subatomic particles. In physics, we call this Quantum Entanglement - when two particles are linked together in some way, a change induced in one will affect the other, even if they are billions of light-years apart.

This is why I like to thank clients for their commitment to their passion, purpose and health. When you heal, I heal. And when we heal, the world heals.

Life is a daily practice and no one knows wtf they are doing right off the bat. Good things take time to build, whether it’s a relationship, a home, a new skill or a career. So here’s a little reminder that Earth is a school and you are a student. Thanks for showing up to class today, it’s a pleasure to have you here.

Gua Sha is an ancient technique used in Chinese Medicine to support the health and vitality of the tissues and skin.

It can be used on any part of the body, but most have heard of its use as a beauty technique for the face.

Gua Sha is a great addition to your morning routine. It can help with puffiness and sinus congestion that may have accumulated over night along with releasing any tension that has manifested in the facial muscles and jaw.

I love to use gua sha tools in the clinic along the scalp, upper neck and shoulders for those with tension headaches too!

Happy September 1st of 2022.

A reoccurring theme lately has been one of change and transition. Like the good ol’ tower card in tarot this theme has presented itself in many ways from leaving and starting new jobs, transitioning back to school, moving to a new home, leaving a relationship and reestablishing boundaries in our daily lives.

I always recommend keeping a journal during times of change for sometimes we can only see how far we have come through the lens of reflection. It’s always a beautiful gift when we can look book and see all the amazing progress we have made!

08/31/2022

No.

It’s a full sentence and a good one at that.

Our bodies are great at letting us know when we need to say “no”. It can come in the form of jaw tension and clenching, constipation, anger, fatigue, getting sick and more.

Saying no can be uncomfortable though and many people are afraid of what will happen if they set new boundaries for themselves around others where there were none before. Will they still be loved? Will they be accepted? Are they enough?
Yet usually setting boundaries leads to greater respect from others and brings us greater power because we feel balanced in our giving and receiving and supported by our internal and external environment.

I hope you feel supported in communicating your boundaries today and everyday.

There are 4 main types of brain waves:

Beta (12-38hz) - learning and concentration, mental sharpness, anxiety and stress

Alpha (8-12hz) - relaxed focus, production of serotonin, beginning of access to unconscious

Theta (4-8hz) - deep meditation and relaxation, light sleep (REM), healing, sensation of oneness, creativity

Delta (0.5-4hz) - deep and dreamless sleep, deep healing, release of human growth hormone, unconscious mind

During acupuncture the brain oscillates between alpha and theta supporting relaxing and healing with a decrease in beta waves.

75% of people have suffered from a tension-type headache according to the American Migraine Foundation.

How can acupuncture help with TTH?

Acupuncture helps to alleviate tension locally along the neck, shoulders, spine, jaw and head. It also helps to decrease stress and lower inflammation leading to better resilience in our day to day stress response.

And in a randomized controlled trials, acupuncture given 2-3 times weekly over an 2 month period helped reduce chronic tension type headaches by over 50%.

I hope this Friday has you rolling into the weekend with the feeling that you are exactly where you need to be… no need to ruminate on the part or worry about the future.

This can be harder than it seems, sometimes requiring self-forgiveness for ways we didn’t feel we showed up in the past or somehow gave our power away, or trust- trust that we are supported in this life, that the actions we take, the thoughts that we feed ourselves, and the boundaries that we set create the foundation for our future.

What are some ways that help you to show up with presence in your daily life?

For me it’s starting my morning with a daily journal. My favorite is “Simple Morning Lists” by Desirae Endres as it is a simple way to let go of the old, get clear about the now, and set the tone for the future.

Ow ow ow. It seems everyone’s got some sort of jaw tension these days! Here are some quick pointers on how to ameliorate the clench!

- First and foremost get yourself to a good dentist to find out whether you need a night guard or if there are other aspects causing night grinding like sleep apnea.

- Can you get to the root of what’s keeping you in a holding pattern? Sometimes clenching is the body’s way of telling us our response is a hard no. Have you listened to it?

- If day to day stress is a culprit, find your favorite ways to gain resilience. This can come in the form of meditation, daily walks, journaling, time alone, massage, acupuncture, exercise and more.

- Find yourself the right practitioners who can support your body in alignment and release via a great chiropractor, a massage therapist who offers intra-oral massage or craniosacral therapy, and an acupuncturist who can pin point directly to the muscles in need and release them!

What do we offer at Mama’s?

In a time where the motto is adrenaline, coffee, more more more and go go go, I challenge you to extend grace to yourself in whatever form that may be. May you take time to nurture yourself, know you are enough exactly as you are, and give yourself the time and space to grow and thrive at a pace that is right for you… and not everybody else.

What does everyday grace look like to you? Let me know in the comments 🫴

If the “voices” in your head aren’t supporting your best self in your work, your health, and your relationships, it may be time to rewrite those subconscious beliefs. These beliefs may be ingrained from our experiences as children, through our ancestral line, and what we are bombarded with on a day-to-day basis through media and our environment.

There are various ways to reprogram your brain and it all starts with a healthy brain.

A healthy brain is a brain with…
- good circulation from exercise and proper breathing
- nourishment from a well-balanced diet
- support through wholesome thoughts and self-talk
- a healthy balance of focus and relaxation through good sleep + self-care habits such as massage, meditation, and acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a perfect entryway to the subconscious as it supports brain states that aid in reprogramming your mind and beliefs through…
- Engaging the parasympathetic nervous system
- Inducing the brain into alpha waves
- Improving neuroplasticity
- Ameliorating mental + physical symptoms from traumatic events and experiences
- Reducing stress and lowering cortisol levels

We can be the masters of strife or we can be the masters of ease.

“We always have the power to transform ourselves and how we experience our lives.

To know that external events are life trying to show us inner places to be healed is so different than feeling a victim of chaotic events.”

Acupuncture and the art of stillness.

In stillness we can feel and release, envision what we want and receive inner guidance and clarity to move forward. These mental breaks increase our productivity, support our longevity, and encourage creativity and balance ✨

08/11/2022

Moving with presence in day to day life is much easier when we feel centered in ourselves, grounded and sure, with an inner knowing and trust that we have what it takes to handle whatever comes our way.

There’s a sense of clarity that acupuncture helps to restore in us when we give our body, mind, and soul the chance to recalibrate and restore. In the stillness of a session we can gain new perspectives, feel into new ideas, and harness new visions that stem from our hearts.

A crowd favorite amongst acupuncture regulars!

Liver 3 is a common point used to support energy flow when there is pent up stress like feeling frustrated or stuck in your head. It helps bring the energy down from your head to your feet so that you can feel centered, relaxed, and grounded 🌳
