Laura Yoo, LE, LAc

By appointment, Sunday-Wednesday. Licensed Acupuncturist and Licensed Esthetician at the Manning Wellness Clinic. Just throwing that out there.

Here to help you feel and look like your best self! I am happy to discuss your health issues and my services as an acupuncturist. Please note, however, that Facebook owns everything on it-- timeline, messaging, whatever--so if you are uncomfortable with your information belonging to them to do with whatever they want, perhaps a phone call would be more prudent? If you've already posted on your tim

Now that I don't have to key the parking garage elevator (it's gated after hours now, passes are for residents, not visitors), I had the outgoing patient hold the loading dock door to let in my next appointment. They've dubbed my weekend hours, "Speakeasy Sundays." šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ (Being itā€™s an unmarked door at the side of a nondescript brick building and a stranger asks if youā€™re here to see Laura)

Yā€™all, my treatments are pretty good, but theyā€™re not to die for. If thereā€™s ice on the roads, stay home! Iā€™ll let you know if I need to cancel; please do the same.

Apple News just served me a Food Network story of 15 Foods that are ruining your skin, according to a nutritionist. And I get it, too much sugar, salt, and fat arenā€™t good for you, but a complete lack of joy will also rob you of your beauty. Thatā€™s according to an acupuncturist/esthetician!

Checks out. My office window seems to be the place to make flowers!

This was a very unimpressive plant, but look at the budding. Itā€™s going to be spectacular. Sometimes you just need to keep watering and be patient.

I've been told the best acupuncture season is cold weather, because "then I know the foot warmer and the table pad are definitely going to be on." Today is one of those days! (I don't leave the heat lamp plugged in all day, and I know it's not as cozy for y'all when I plug it in just before it's needed. Sorry! But if I just left it plugged in all day, most days I would sweat on you. You get cold because you're lying down, and I get hot because I'm a middle aged woman. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøšŸ„µ Also, the scheduling gods inevitably put another middle aged woman on the table right after an "I'm so cold all the time." šŸ¤£

The FDA stated last week what many of us already knew; that phenylephrine (active ingredient in Sudafed PE and other OTC decongestants) doesn't actually work. You have still been able to get pseudoephedrine (old version Sudafed) without a prescription, but you have to ask the pharmacist, show your ID, and sign som**hing that basically says you're not going to make m**h with it. And you can only get so much every month. So you don't make m**h.

I have a stash of pseudoephedrine in case I need it (yes, we have herbs that do that, but thanks to weight loss drugs and baseball players that hurt themselves, they're more of a hassle to get than drugs), but I don't need it very often. When my face feels very full, often massaging my nose does the trick. Here's how: 1) push forward with your tongue above your front teeth. 2) push back between your eyebrows. Alternating these two movements rocks the vomer, a bone inside your nose that defines your sinuses. It takes a minute sometimes. Like you aren't expecting anything to happen and all of the sudden there is a tiny opening, which opens a bigger path and hey, you're breathing again!

If your congestion needs more managing than an occasional sinus massage, come and see me in the office! I'm at Manning Wellness Sunday-Wednesday by appointment. 214-720-2225

Do you like plants? Do you see me at my office or have you ever thought you should? I've officially reached the sourdough starter phase of low maintenance plant keeping. Come get a plant. There's more at home, but someone has decided that my best window is only for edibles (See comment).

Nutrition Scienceā€™s Most Preposterous Result: Could Ice Cream Possibly Be Good for You? 07/31/2023

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2023/05/ice-cream-bad-for-you-health-study/673487/

Before you take this as license to eat as much ice cream as you can (don't think I've forgotten how people took it when I talked about cleaning with ethanol after the cholesterol lab in organic chemistry!) I'm just saying 1) it's funny! and 2) not everything is good or bad for you in black and white terms.

Nutrition Scienceā€™s Most Preposterous Result: Could Ice Cream Possibly Be Good for You? Studies show a mysterious health benefit to ice cream. Scientists donā€™t want to talk about it.

AI and acupuncture:
I have a Google alert for acupuncture, and it sent me a bunch of articles. They were all from the same junk website. There is a sort of algorithm that happens in my head when Iā€™m listening to you and deciding what to do, but itā€™s going to be a while before I let the computer guide me instead of me guiding it.

Also, I just got an email encouraging me to claim my listing on this esteemed healthcare directory. They had scraped this here profile. Badly. I deleted it, but I think Iā€™m going to fish it out of my trash folder so I can mark it spam.

We all need validation and confidence boosting sometimes. When people come in talking about dry needling, I will sometimes only work in the area of chief complaint, because that is what theyā€™re used to and what they think (and occasionally say very loudly that) they want. But what they want is relief, and sometimes dry needling doesnā€™t get it for them. šŸ¤”

Today I worked on a back in spasm. Cupping to relax the muscles, needles in the back. Except afterwards, the patient was still twitching. It was when I put needles in the hands and legs that they stopped. Acupuncture, yā€™all. šŸ˜

It's your hour! I'm fine leaving the room for you to meditate while the pins are in. I'm also fine with talking about TV with you (my patients have the best taste)! It's taking me a long time to get into visual stories these days, though, so give me a week or two if I haven't already watched it. Inside Man and Drops of God are on my to-watch list. With the cast, I feel like I'm going to have to revisit Black Mirror. I'm finishing up Alice in Borderland season 2 on Netflix. In books, I just finished The Anthropocene, Reviewed by Hank Green and Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton.

If I have electricity hooked up to the pins, I'm staying in the room, but we can always be quiet, too. Don't feel obligated to make conversation; it's ok!

I'm glad when people get good results, and I'm glad when acupuncture has good press. HowEVAH. Have you heard acupuncture in the ear is good for weight loss? New study, statistically significant, yadda yadda. IT ALSO INCLUDED HALVING THE CALORIC INTAKE. Which is not to say stress management, good sleep, and being mindful (all of which acupuncture is good for!) don't help with maintaining a healthy weight! But be informed; the headlines are often misleading. So, while "acupuncture cures alphagal syndrome" is exciting for meat eaters who might have had tick bites, you don't know how well it's going to work for you. So wear protective clothing and insect repellent and check yourself when you come back inside from your hike, yeah?

Dreamchimes 2 - More Wind Chimes in the Australian Bush by Australian Nature Sounds 03/27/2023

This has been my room music for years now. People have been asking lately. In my opinion, "relaxing music" shouldn't have words or melody, but plain white noise is a little too plain.

Google Maps artifact: on both my listing and the Manning Wellness listing, I see a line for floor. And I donā€™t think itā€™s supported, because I canā€™t edit it as a profile owner or suggest it as an edit. I imagine most people would see suite 362 and go to floor 3, but it bugs me a lot that Manning Wellness displays ā€œFloor 1ā€ and mine displays ā€œFloor 2.ā€ The building is confusing enough! Android users, are you seeing this?

Pfizer says COVID-19 vaccine will cost $110-$130 per dose 10/22/2022

Covid vaccines are still free to you, for now. In a few months, that may not be the case. There are lots of new variants popping up, but so far fairly well covered by the bivalent shots. So if you haven't gotten yours, there's another incentive.

Pfizer says COVID-19 vaccine will cost $110-$130 per dose Pfizer will charge $110 to $130 for a dose of its COVID-19 vaccine once the U.S. government stops buying the shots, but the drugmaker says it expects many people will continue receiving it for free. Pfizer executives said the commercial pricing for adult doses could start early next year, depending....

If you havenā€™t ordered your 3 rounds of free covid tests, you have until Sept 2. Just keep submitting orders until the website tells you that youā€™re maxed out. https://t.co/nPzdDqClEg This is a good, comprehensive twitter thread with all the details I could think of. You can order for others. Donā€™t forget to check expiration dates.

Driving directions: Thereā€™s a bit of construction happening, but itā€™s pretty easy to navigate. Turn into Herschel from Oak Lawn, across the street from the Shops of Highland Park, so you canā€™t take a wrong turn there. The entrance to the parking garage is on the right. Park in any visitor space and take the elevator to L. Cross to the other elevator and go up to 3. Turn right and youā€™ll find us.

If you're not entering via the parking garage: The building entrance is on Herschel, across from the dry cleaner. Go straight through, then take an elevator from the left (not to the parking garage, only one button). Go up to 3 and turn right.
