For Henry, a complex cancer diagnosis complicated by COVID-19 presented many challenges. Thanks to Dr. Tamra Slone, Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist at Children’s Health and Associate Professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and Henry's care team, he got the compassionate care he needed to push through a long and challenging treatment. Congrats to our recent graduates who are transitioning to adult care! Patients with sickle cell disease have worked hard to understand their care and advocate for themselves as they transition to adult care. We're sad to see them go, but thanks to the collaboration of their care teams, they're prepared for the next chapter.

It's with heavy hearts we share that our beloved Badger, one of our facility dogs, passed away from complications due to cancer. Badger joined our Children’s Health family in 2016 when he was 2, and provided endless snuggles and support to countless number of patients, families and team members.

Throughout his 8 years, he served in the Heart Center, Solid Organ Transplant, Palliative Care and as a part of the RISE team. Badger also welcomed our new team members as the "spokesdog" in introducing family support services. Badger had the unique ability to make others smile with comfort and love. According to the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, 1 in 3 Texas children experience a mental health disorder each year. To meet the demand, Dr. Sabrina Browne, Pediatric Psychiatrist at Children’s Health and Assistant Professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center, is a champion of children and working to fill this gap through the Behavioral Health Integration and Guidance Initiative (BHIG). BHIG offers pediatricians around the country continuing education to identify mental health needs and provide early therapies for mild-to-moderate conditions.
