The latest read on June consumer inflation was notably cooler than expected, buoying expectations for a potential near-term adjustment in Federal Reserve (Fed) policy. The latest read on other measures of prices, however, including the PPI and alternative calculations provided by regional Federal Reserve banks, came in hotter than expected, muddying the outlook for the future trajectory of rates.

President Joe Biden continued the trend of incumbent Presidents stumbling in their first debate when running for reelection. Mr. Biden's problem is that his performance reinforced voters' worries about his age and ability to serve another term. Despite numerous reports of panic among Democrats, there is no mechanism to remove him from the ticket. Only he can decide not to run. So far, there have been no signs that he intends to do that, but maybe that will change in the coming days.

A cooler-than-expected May inflation report following minimal improvement in April has reinforced the Federal Reserve (Fed)'s position on the sidelines, now for the seventh consecutive meeting, with the Committee noting "modest" progress towards the Fed's 2% target. Although on a relative basis with the annual pace of inflation still above January levels, (3.3 vs. 3.1% for CPI and 2.2% vs. 1.0% for PPI) and nominally, the growth rate exceeding the 2% target, it's clear the Committee has more work to do before the goal of price stability is achieved, let alone gain the needed confidence to justify a reduction in policy firming.

In this note, we look at several sectors that could be impacted by the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. Populism continues to gain strength in both political parties, so a greater emphasis on industrial policy and central planning are the likely results no matter which candidate wins. We anticipate some sectors might fare better than others depending on the outcome. Regardless of how those issues sort themselves out, we expect a big debate over tax policy in 2025-26, which could be very beneficial to the lobbying industry.
