Rachel Larlee was diagnosed with dyslexia, changing her career trajectory from psychology to education. “I always knew that it would take me twice if not three times as long, to do something that my friends just do really quickly,” Larlee says. The trajectory led to her work with children at an Albanian orphanage and a preschool in London. She taught locally in 2014 when her husband’s pastoral work brought them to Dallas.

Larlee started selling freestyle embroidery pieces on social media and at pop-up events in Dallas. Later, Larlee “fell in love with watercolors” and used the art style in a “play-based way.”

Today, Rachel Larlee Studio in The Village offers classes that aren’t just about art. Her psychology and education backgrounds bring mindfulness exercises into the mix.

When do you think the first person of Asian descent was listed in a Dallas city directory? Stephanie Drenka, co-founder of the nonprofit Asian American Historical Society, opens with this question at speaking engagements, with answers from the 1950s to the ’80s. The answer is 1873, when J.L. Chow, of Chinese descent, opened Chow Chow Laundry on Elm and Main Street in the first Dallas city directory.

She learned Chow inspired Chinese immigrants Austin and Sam Shong to open their own laundromat in 1878, followed by a third in downtown Dallas owned by Sam Choi.

Desta Ethiopian has undergone a bit of a revamp, but one aspect manager Noble Goliad says won’t change: flavorful, traditional dishes cooked in the same time-honored way they’ve been prepared since 2010.

While sharing a meal is a custom which spans ethnicity, cultures and continents, Goliad says it takes on an entirely different meaning for Ethiopians.

“We eat with our hands and we always eat as a group,” she says. “Nobody eats alone, so it’s a cultural thing. So you just eat together. You stay together.”

“I can say, truthfully, that the women of Lake Highlands have very big hearts, and they enjoy giving back, so I think that organization will sustain just fine,” says Board Member Amy Timmerman.

The premise for 100 Women of Lake Highlands is simple. Designed by Crispin Deneault to make philanthropy accessible, neighborhood women meet three times a year, hear from area nonprofits, choose one, and each member makes a donation.

For each meeting, a raffle allows three nonprofits to make a pitch.
President Beth Rider and Timmerman share that one donation stood out above the rest when 8-year-old Julian Kampfschulte passed away after a battle with the neurodegenerative disease ALD. Every other nonprofit at that meeting withdrew, allowing the creation of a scholarship in Julian’s name.

Rachel Larlee combines psychology and art 07/12/2024

Mindfulness and the power of play are equally important in the process of creating art for Rachel Larlee’s art classes.

“Creativity has always been like a reset for me. I am an introvert, and having three children and an extrovert husband, I needed those moments of reset: of going in and creating,” Larlee says.

After an online watercolor painting class, Larlee’s house was “bursting at the seams” with her artwork. Serendipity led her to open a shop in The Village where she sells her work, teaches lessons and uses the space to create.

This summer, Larlee will host several camps for teens and preteens in addition to her open houses on Saturdays.
