Live on DreamCars | 1957 Ford Thunderbird Convertible
This week, Dream Cars is featuring two sporting Ford coupes, reflecting both a response to market changes, and then outright creating a new one. The first-generation Thunderbird was both Ford’s more luxurious answer to the Corvette, and a response to the post-war two-seaters from Europe that inspired American interpretations of the style. Despite good sales for the first generation T-Bird, produced from 1955 to 1957, Ford opted to make the second generation Thunderbird larger, incorporating a rear seat as a 2+2 for 1958. While that car was a sales success, the early car inspired a retro attempt by Ford in the early 2000’s, going back to two seats and using styling cues from the original model.

This is a clean and original example, from the last era of affordable British sports cars that had been so prevalent for decades. These light and agile convertibles had been an important part of American car culture starting back in the early 40’s when American military personnel fighting overseas during the second World War discovered these little gems running all over the European continent, and brought them back to the US. Hugely different than what was available from American manufacturers at the time, they helped give rise to amateur road racing by being durable and affordable, and Triumph was at the forefront of that movement.

While many were made during that ten-year span, not many survived, or had enough fans that considered them worth keeping.
