"Red pears can be a striking subject for a still life painting. When the light hits the pear it can create a variety of rich shades of red. I liked the contrast between the deep reds and the bright white of the doily. The grapes added a nice touch and the lace and embroidery of the doily added elegance to the subject."

"The broken oak casts dappled light, an ideal, cool place to sit and read, or contemplate. The thick, dense leaves let through winking glints of sun. From the shade I lazily gaze at the sun-kissed field beyond."

Congratulation to Cara Robbins-Karan for the sale of Blooming Tree.
"In this piece, and in all my work, I push color. I look to find every hue in the white blooms as well as a wide range of values. My work is full of thick, chunky paint. Nature is my greatest inspiration and compels me to capture its beauty on canvas."

"South of Dallas, not far from Corsicana, is a location my wife and I frequent often to shoot photos of wildlife. This place is a wildlife management area and we have seen many interesting things. Also present are these pump jacks, or as some call them, “Oil Birds”. While I was shooting photos for a painting, Great White Egrets flew by, as if to photo bomb my shot. I thought is pretty cool and worked out this composition with both birds, and an “Oil Bird”."

"This painting grew from a workshop in Louisiana. The studio owner had a large shelf full of containers of supplies for students. Was thinking of how artists collect many supplies over the years only to buy more thinking the next is better."

VALENTINE'S DAY IDEA
3D greeting cards have been all the rage for a few years now, but what do you do with them once the occasion is over? If you are like me, you can’t bear to throw those tokens of love into the trash and end up with drawer stuffed full of them. Plus, 3D cards are works of art and creative engineering themselves. A shadowbox frame is the perfect way to display them, or any of your cards, so they aren’t left gathering dust.

"Daisy and Dandelions are nature’s optimists. They are always there for you.
In Texas, we have blooms from these little, hard working flowers most of the year.
They don’t care where they grow. They will cheer up any space. And you can always count of them to help make a wish come true or predict the future. Loves me! has just enough petals to cast a happy fortune."
Loves Me! by Lynn Rushton

"Saya, a colonial dance and music form originating in the “altiplano” region between modern day Peru and Bolivia, originates from the integration of African slaves with the native Andean population. The name “Saya” stems from the Kikongan word nsaya, an African term akin to a work song, further reinforcing the dance’s African roots. While the Saya dance is still used by Afro communities in their struggle for equal rights, its use has been widely expanded from the original purpose, now used to express community solidarity in countries including Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina."

NEW IN THE GALLERY!
What began as experimentation while playing around with an iPad has become this series of unique animal portraits using color pointillism with acrylic paints. Artist Mark Gates finds the process to be very meditative; watching an image come to life with just a few specks of the right combination of colors to bring out the details in each animal.
Dotted Buffalo by Mark Gates
20×20 inch | Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas
"The Buffalo is an American icon and symbol of the Old West. I wanted to show the strength and unique beauty of the buffalo through contrast and unexpected color. This was my first “dot painting” in a series of many and one of my favorites."
Bespeckled Owl by Mark Gates
10×10 inch | Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas
"I was lucky enough to photograph a gray owl that silently swooped down behind our house. It was silvery gray with patterns of brown, a white bowtie across its neck and all dressed up for its evening meal."
Spotted Coyote by Mark Gates
12×12 inch| Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas
"A pack of coyotes howling at night can make your hair stand on end. With much respect for the spirit and survival instinct of the coyote, this rendition showcases their steely resilience."
Dappled Jack Rabbit by Mark Gates
20×20 inch | Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas
"The Jack Rabbit’s sharp senses keep them always on alert for danger. This American desert hare can reach speeds of over 40 mph. It’s hard to get them to stop long enough to paint their portrait."
VALENTINE'S DAY IDEA

"The power and pure muscle lions are known for is immense, but they are graceful and fluid. It’s what makes them living art. I wanted to portray this strength in a subtle way for the viewer, like turning a corner and realizing you yourself may have just been spotted by her, unless you’re quiet and careful."
