Wine 13
Had this one for Steak Night with the family. Didn’t really taste it with studious concentration, just popped, poured, and guzzled with the family, as it should be.
Dark and inky as would be expected. Deep, rich flavors of black and blue fruits with cocoa and vanilla rounding it out.
Structure was very nice - richly textured with just enough acid to keep it lifted. The plentiful soft, approachable tannins were a perfect match with the Prime NY Strips and Ribeyes.
Wine is in a great space. Will certainly hold for many years longer, but I’m not sure how much better it is going to get. Admittedly, I like wines on the upswing.
Drink now (or soon-ish)!
Wine 12 Pale gold. On the nose is honeysuckle, lemon, and flinty minerality. As it warmed up in the glass, some soft peach aromas came wafting through. Mouthwatering, juicy, tart, ripe, delicious. Lemon and apple on the palate. A nice touch of salinity on the backend, perfect integration of the fruit and acid. Really opened up in the glass and changed dramatically as it warmed, became more voluptuous, but neither lost any of the minerality nor the mouthwatering juiciness. Paired with Icelandic Arctic Char baked simply with Chef Milton Atlantic Sea Salt with Herbs de Provence, Poivre à la Bordelaise purchased at Boüard, and lemon juice accompanied by baby bella mushrooms and elephant garlic sautéed with Olive Oil and asparagus, finished with parmesan and lemon juice. Absolutely delicious. Serious wine. Not necessarily inexpensive but a great value. Honestly, such a treat to drink a 6-year old Aligoté of this class that I (almost) regret popping it open for just me. If you have a bottle, share with a wine-loving friend; they will appreciate it!
Wine 11
Very pale color. Fruity nose bursting with orange and peach aromas. More orange and peach on the palate, with some apple skin. Soft, round, creamy mouthfeel. Juicy acidity. Long, delicious finish. Surprisingly, this light, fresh rosé ends with drying tannins.
Combination of great acids, pure fruit, and drying tannins make this a great food wine.
Blend: 50% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 20% Syrah, 10% Tibouren.
Delicious.
Lunch and tasting with the genius of Gigondas, Louis Barruol. The wines were inspiring.

2015 for the win, and it tastes especially outstanding here at the
Really an amazing wine full of deep red cherry, strawberry jam, oak spice, all rich and warm resting on top of juicy acidity and powdered tannins.
No doubt this beauty has 10+ years in front of it, but it is simply fabulous today.

Wine 10 is another fun, small winery which produces interesting wines from those other grapes. This blend of 60% Carignane, 20% Zinfandel, 10% French Colombard, and 10% Grenache is the quintessential “chill it down and slurp it up” red(dish) wine. Populis takes 1/3 of the must and do what they call a “reverse saignée’’ where they press the 1/3 to a rosé, then add the pink juice back into the original tanks that now have less skins to create a wine with less concentration, a light red color, very high acidity, and low alcohol (12.5%). Concentrated strawberry and sweet red apple are buoyed by bright acidity. Just a touch of smoke and leather add complexity. I enjoyed it chilled down into the low 50s. This would be perfect with roast chicken, smoked turkey legs, or grilled salmon. What a fun wine, so different and fun.
Flashback.
Wine 9 I’ve been on quite a kick chasing down fun American producers who make great wines from those “other” grapes. The price-to-quality ratio is tops, and it’s always fun to support folks who have the gumption to do something unique. I can’t get enough of labels like Lioco, Idlewild, Birichino, Bedrock, Stolpman, Pax, Matthiasson, and the list goes on and on and on. And it includes Martha Stoumen, who makes some stunningly fun wines from a variety of lesser-known grapes. I recently had the pleasure of popping her 2018 Martha Stoumen Nero d’Avola Mendocino County. I have a couple more bottles and I have put them down for a several year nap as this beauty has some life left in it! On the nose were plums, to***co, and a touch of smokiness. Strawberry and rhubarb were hard-to-miss on the palate, with surprisingly grippy tannins. Lively acidity. Earthy minerality. Fresh, lithe, and powerful, but never heavy. Lengthy finish. What a fun wine, just plain delicious. Highly recommended.

Wine 8
This exuberant, aromatic, deeply flavorful wine is peaking right now; it is simply amazing.
What sets this juice apart is the tension between the richness and the acidity.
The richness comes from the new oak and the lees aging that lasts right up until bottling.
The acidity shouldn’t come as any surprise since the alcohol is only 12.8%.
Lemony notes, nutty notes, salty notes, with a touch of butterscotch creeping in from the age.
So vibrant and vervy yet so rich and soft.
Highly recommend.
Wine 7
This blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Carignane is a solid performer, nothing flashy, just a solid wine at a very nice price point.
Notes of black pepper, grilled meat, raspberry, strawberry, with an earthy minerality and some leathery notes provide for nice complexity.
Mouthwatering acidity and finely-grained tannins provide for a great structure at this price point.
Excellent wine, definitely drink now.

2021 Kurtatsch Sonntaler Vernatsch Alte Reben Schiava Sudtirol Alto Adige DOC
Pale red. Light red fruits like sour cherry, cranberrles, strawberries, and red currants. Smokey and brushy undertones. Rocky mineral component. Really appealing nose.
On the palate, the strawberry and other tart red fruits are confirmed, as are the dusty, rocky flavors. I love the mouthfeel, the tannins are so finely-grained and smooth, but they are there. The acids and tart fruit flavors provide such a quaffable, mouth-watering experience.
I love this wine, truly. Light, fresh, tart, with all kinds of subtle complexity. Perfect for salmon, chicken, pork loin, or just a springtime patio. Highly recommend you chill this down to the mid-50s, light reds like this seem to like that temp.

Steve Matthiasson is one of the most sought-after vineyard consultants in California, a real legend, and he is also a daring and brilliant winemaker. I’m a big fan, have been for years. Luckily, I have more than a couple of his delicious bottles in my cellar.
His 2022 Rosé is brilliant. I drink more rosé than any other type of wine, with whites a close second, and then reds. Typing that makes me think I need to drink more sparkling wines.
This wine is, without a doubt, currently my favorite rosé on the market, period. I bought a case last year and have slowly been working my way through it.
Very pale salmon color is matched by the very light body. Bracingly-refreshing acidity. Subtle minerality, light citrus and berry fruits, with just the cleanest, most enjoyable palate one could ever hope for. Just a flawless rosé, so incredibly light and fresh and just plain delicious.
34% Grenache, 32% Barbera, 16% Counoise, 14% Mouvedre, and 4% other reds from the Windmill Vineyard and Muller Vineyard in the Dunnigan Hills AVA.
Hard to overstate the impact made on my life. In many ways, it shaped everything that followed its 2008 opening. And here we are 15-short years later …
But every life change requires a little help to move things along, and Veritas Wine Room has provided me with a “few” fun bottles of wine that will “help” me over the next few months … or years of my life!
So here we go with Wine #1 of … and what better wine to start with than the 2017 Domaine Paul Blanck Gewurztraminer made by one of my favorite human beings on Planet Earth, the himself, Philippe Blanck? I spent a week in April of 2011 with Philippe in Alsace, and during the course of that week I fell more deeply in love with both Philippe and his family and the wines of Alsace than I ever would have imagined possible.
This wine was a light golden color, with a soft, subtle nose (for a gewurz) of citrus and lychee, and a gently-perfumed floral note. The soft palate has a touch of spice and stone-fruit with a lingering sweetness.
In its youth, Gewrurz is all about the ebullience - spicy, floral, incredibly aromatic, just intense in every way. This had all of those notes, but the 7-years of bottle age subdued them all, with the result being a softly sweet, interestingly complex, and eminently enjoyable wine.
Great wine. Enjoyable to drink a 7-year old Gewurz that was showing some age, and it went beautifully with the Thai-inspired Ginger and Coconut Cream Pork Meatball soup I made!
This wine is drinking beautifully. Full of life. Succulent, ripe cherry, but slightly tart. Vibrant, but nuanced. Good stuff.

Well, I just couldn’t clear out the “Little Wine Bar that Could” without drinking a splash of something fun.
The 2020 from the was just what the doctor ordered.
Incredibly light, 11.0% alcohol, clear ruby color, with a soft mouthfeel, just enough acidity, smooth flavors of red berries and a grape-y note make for an easy splash. Floral notes and a touch of black pepper give just enough complexity to keep it interesting.
This wine is NOT for sale at Veritas Wine Room, but multiple bottles can be found … at my house!
My kind of sippin’ red, just delicious.
