Dayton Piano Teachers Study Club
The Dayton Piano Teachers Study Club was organized by Marion Dickenson in 1968.
3 Steps to Mastering Memorization Mastering memorization can increase your ability to play with musicality and freedom. The first step is understanding the 4 types of memory.
12 Ways Parents Can Help with Piano Practice Parents play a crucial role in the success of young students’ piano study in many ways. This is especially true today with many lessons moving online due to the coronavirus. The list of ways that parents can help with practice, excerpted from Premier Piano Course, At-Home Book 1A, follows.
Why do people pay for piano lessons?
The answer is….they don’t pay for piano lessons. They pay for so much more.
- They pay for their child to learn what it takes to commit to something meaningful;
- They pay so that their child can learn the magic of creation, of forming something beautiful using their hands;
- They pay so that their child recognises the power of discipline, of working at something consistently, at least five days per week, honing their skills and building their fluency;
- They pay so that their child understands not to quit when the novelty has worn off and the work must set in;
- They pay so their child learns that they must still put in the work, even when tired and grumpy, not just giving up and spending hours on TikTok;
- They pay so that they can learn the joy of creating music with others: listening intently, and learning to chop, change and compromise;
- They pay so that they realise that it’s not just “enjoying themselves” but working meticulously on small details;
- They pay so that they DO enjoy themselves;
- They pay so that their child creates neural pathways that impact every single area of the curriculum;
- They pay so that their child develops the most incredible fine motor skills;
- They pay so that their child sees that art can be transcendent, and can accompany us through our darkest times;
- They pay because music puts us in touch with something that can’t be otherwise expressed.

Pretty sure that's what piano stands for... Happy !
This beloved instrument was invented in Padua, Italy in the year 1709 by musician Bartolomeo Cristofori.
He was frustrated with the lack of control one had over the notes created by the common harpsichord, so he went to work and adapted a new instrument.
The piano was originally dubbed "clavicembalo col piano el forte" which literally translates to "harpsichord that can play soft and loud noises."
Help Your Students Gain Sight-Reading Confidence We know that children learn to read and understand words through experience with language: hearing it, speaking it, and encountering it in written form again and again in increasingly expressive ways. As it turns out, students learn to be better sight-readers by employing analogous music decoding st...

THIS WEEK IN PIANO HISTORY: Composer Scott Joplin was granted a copyright for his Maple Leaf Rag on September 18, 1899. Maple Leaf Rag went on to become one of the most famous ragtime compositions of all time. Because of its popularity, it helped provide significant income to Joplin throughout his life and inspired many other composers to write ragtime music - including American composer William Bolcom. Joplin once stated, “One day the 'Maple Leaf' will make me King of Ragtime Composers.” 123 year later, his prediction still rings true. Have you ever played or taught the Maple Leaf Rag? Comment “Yes!” if so!
