And a bit of explanation...

Thanksgiving 2020 would have seen the Dearborn Heights Citadel Band's 100th Thanksgiving Festival, but due to COVID, the Festival was cancelled. So, in 2021, the Band presented its 100th Festival. This video is one of the pieces from that Festival that was given the theme "Faithfulness."

In December of 1882, the first Salvationists marched into the City of Detroit and held meetings at the Soldier's and Sailor's Monument in Campus Martius across from the old City Hall. While their efforts didn't last, they introduced the City to the ministry of The Salvation Army.

In July 1884, Major Thomas Moore (then US National Commander) came to Detroit to set-up a statewide office for the Salvation army in Michigan. He also appointed Captain Ella Beers and Lt. Rachel Teacraft to set-up a Corps in Detroit. After a little more than a year, that work also folded.

In October of 1887, Captain Fink was appointed to open the Detroit, No. 1 Corps. The third time MUST be the charm because this work of The Army grew and blossomed into a thriving Corps. Eventually, five Corps and a Training Home would be established in the City of Detroit, even though by 1900, the only Corps left in the City would be the No. 1 Corps, Detroit Citadel.

It is estimated that the Detroit Citadel Band was formed around 1892, and held its first weekend away at Ann Arbor in 1895. Under the leadership of Bandmaster William Nichols, the band grew and established itself as a fine musical group. Around 1906, Staff-Captain Robert H. Keeler came to Detroit and took up leadership of the band. Under his leadership the band continued to grow, and advance in its quality of playing.

In 1920, Richard Herivel assumed leadership of the band. He would lead the band for more than thirty years. That first year (1920) he was Bandmaster, Richard Herivel had the idea for a concert on Thanksgiving Day. The Band board thought that was a good idea, and so started a yearly tradition that continues to this day.

The Dearborn Heights Citadel Band continues the tradition of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the medium of music. Music that both stirs the soul, and brings us into an attitude of worship.

The video of this Selection shows photos of the band taken over the years. The theme of the Festival was 'Faithfulness,' and in those photos are people who faithfully gave of themselves, their time, and their talents to the proclamation of the Gospel through music. Their faithfulness to their ministry has been passed down through the years to the players of the current Dearborn Heights Citadel Band, who still exemplify that faithfulness as they minister through the Band.

100th Thanksgiving Festival

This year the Dearborn Heights (formerly Detroit) Citadel Band celebrated a milestone in its history: our 100th Thanksgiving Festival. The Detroit Citadel Band, then under the direction of Bandmaster Emeritus Richard Herivel started a tradition of having a festival on Thanksgiving day.

Since these festivals first began in 1920, only one has ever had to be cancelled: 2020, which would have been the 100th Anniversary of that first festival. But, by the grace of God, and the faithfulness of the Citadel Band personnel, that milestone, put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic, was celebrated for the 100th time on Sunday 21 November at the Citadel.

The Band not only included today's personnel, but also those who formerly played in the Band. Majors John and Julie Aren, both former members of the band gave us a musical offering of a Horn Solo with Piano Accompaniment (Variations on a Welsh Theme). Angus MackKenzie and granddaughter Rebekah Moritz played William Himes' Cornet Duet - Faithfulness. The program consisted of light items that made for an enjoyable festival.

The two main selections for the evening were Stephen Bullas' "A Soldier's Proclamation," which included a slideshow of historical photos of the Band, and William Himes' moving devotional Meditation - Christ is All.

The other numbers in the festival included the Marches - "Winterthur Centenary" (Ray Bowes) and "Jamaica Citadel" (Richard E. Holz." A Vocal Duet - "There was Jesus" (Zach Williams & Dolly Parton) sung by Jamie Merritt and Kelly Holman. Colleen Dahl and Dana Anderson played a Piano Duet (Sonata in Cmajor), and the band played the arrangements "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" (Rogers & Hammerstein, Arr. Thomas V. Mack), "Better Every Day" (Robert Snelson) and "Dance like David" (Andrew Mackereth). And during the offering we were blessed with an offertory by Allen Hanton.

Bandsman Angus MacKenzie, the longest serving member of the band gave a talk about the history of the band and the festival. Captains David and Shannon Martinez offered prayer, led Congregational Songs and Captain David gave the devotional.

It was an evening of remembrance. It was an evening of thanksgiving and praise. It was an evening of celebration and thanks to God for HIS faithfulness over the band's 135 year history, and it was a tribute to the faithfulness of Band personnel gone before and of the faithfulness of the current generation.

Lately, I've discovered a new hobby: making slideshow videos. With better recording equipment to digitize the older Citadel Band recordings, the opportunities for making these has increased. So, be prepared to see more video on this page.

Even with COVID restrictions, the band continues its Sunday morning ministry. I have been recording and making video from those as well.

Please be in prayer for our Corps family during these difficult times.

Blessings to all!
Eric

A Short History

The first Salvation Army Corps (Church) in Detroit was opened in October 1887. Around 1892, the first band was established at what was to become known as Detroit Citadel. The Band had it’s first ‘outing’ to Ann Arbor in 1895 where it assisted in the opening of The Army’s work in that city.

It is not known exactly when the Songsters (Choir) were established, but the first photo of the Detroit Citadel Songsters is dated as 1906.

In 1972 the Detroit Citadel Corps moved from Second and Bagley in Downtown Detroit to Dearborn Heights where it was re-named Dearborn Heights Citadel.

During the 127 year musical ministry of the Detroit/Dearborn Heights Citadel, the Band and Songsters have ministered on our own platform during meetings, and have participated in Salvation Army Divisional (Eastern Michigan), Territorial (USA Central) and national events. Our ministry is not confined to these Salvation Army events. The Band and Songsters can be found ministering in the ‘Open-Air’ at venues in Dearborn Heights, as well as nursing home visitation and at various iconic ‘red kettle’ locations in Wayne County.
