Knights of Columbus Council 3860 Fr. Patrick O'Kelley

In June of 1954, Knights of Columbus Council #3860 held its first meeting in the basement of Sacred Heart School. The council is named after Fr. Maria, St.

Patrick O’Kelly, a missionary priest who spread the gospel throughout much of Southeastern Michigan. Today, our Council holds our meetings at St. Maria Goretti Parish in Dearborn Heights and serves St. Kateri, Sacred Heart, St Alphonsus, and St. Anselm.

When we became Knights, we were given this powerful weapon against evil with the words, “Her holy rosary in our hands, going where we go. The salutation ‘Hail Mary’ on our lips. What challenge can we not face? What victories can we not achieve?”
- Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly

Deacon Pat is a member of our council. God grant them many years.

A Dearborn couple is celebrating their 70th Valentine’s Day together, a testament to their enduring love and commitment.

Patrick and Irene Bruen, who now reside at Beaumont Commons, first met at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit over 70 years ago.

Irene was a nursing student, and Patrick worked various jobs at the hospital. Their romance blossomed, leading to their marriage in 1955.

Over the years, they welcomed seven children, building a family that has been the cornerstone of their long and happy life together.

For this couple, 70 years of Valentine’s days is another way to count the sweetness of 70 years of family, faith and friends.

We mourn the passing of a long-time friend of the Missions.

Monsignor James A. Moloney, , a beloved figure in the Detroit Catholic community and a tireless servant of the Church, passed away today, January 3.

Born on June 18, 1930, in Detroit, he dedicated his life to faith and service. Ordained on June 2, 1956, his journey led him to St. Joan of Arc Parish in St. Clair Shores, and later, to a lifelong mission with the Society for the Propagation.

Monsignor Moloney's passion for mission work was extraordinary. Over six decades, he visited 58 countries, delving into the conditions of those served by the Pope's Missions. His commitment elevated Detroit as a leading diocese in global mission support, contributing over $200 million to missionary activities worldwide.

His impact extended beyond numbers, though. Monsignor Moloney tirelessly wrote to donors, visited parishes, and built relationships, sharing his love for the Church in far-flung places. As the Archdiocesan Director, National Secretary, Vice-President, and Budget and Finance Committee member of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, his leadership was pivotal. Recognized by Pope St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, he held the titles of honorary prelate monsignor and Protonotary Apostolic.

Msgr. Moloney shared a friendship with the late Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, a long-time director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. His life, filled with passion for the missions and love for the people he served, leaves a legacy that will continue to inspire many.

In this time of mourning, we join together in prayer for the eternal repose of Msgr. Moloney's soul and express our profound gratitude for his decades of service. His life was a testament to the power of faith and the impact one individual can have on the lives of many around the world. Let us honor his memory by continuing to support the missions and embody the spirit of selfless service that he exemplified.

“In what does this 'power’ of Jesus Christ the King consist? It is not the power of the kings or the great people of this world; it is the divine power to give eternal life, to liberate from evil, to defeat the dominion of death." - Pope Benedict XVI

On this Solemnity of All Saints, we celebrate those holy men and women who have been canonized by the Church. Let us turn to them in prayer and meditate on their lives so that we may be inspired to live lives fully trusting in Christ.

“The example of the Saints encourages us to follow in their same footsteps and to experience the joy of those who trust in God, for the one true cause of sorrow and unhappiness for men and women is to live far from him.” - Pope Benedict XVI

The hidden life of Jesus was spent in St. Joseph’s workshop. As Pope St. John Paul II said, “Jesus gave the highest proof of the dignity of work.”
