The oppressive heat and elevated fire threat continue on:
Heat headlines remain in effect through 9 PM Sunday for temperatures up to 108 and heat indices up to 112. Additionally, for areas near/west of I-35, an elevated fire threat will persist through at least midweek. Make sure to practice both fire prevention and heat safety!

8.17.24
An elevated fire threat remains present for those west of I-35/I-35W through this weekend due to low humidity and above-normal temperatures. Make sure to avoid outdoor activities that could produce fire starts!

08/17/2024

An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect until Sunday evening for portions of north Texas. Heat index values in the warned (pink) area are expected to exceed 110 degrees this weekend. A Heat Advisory remains in effect for the remainder of the area through Sunday evening. Ensure you're practicing heat safety by drinking plenty of water, taking frequent breaks indoors in the A/C, and wearing light- colored, lightweight clothing.

To my fellow Wise Countians (and anyone who travels on 287):

I need your voices and your experiences!

As I’ve shared before, TxDOT is conducting a US 287 Corridor Interstate Feasibility Study from one end of 287 at Port Arthur to the other end in the Panhandle. TxDOT has asked me to chair the Central Working Group for this study, and the main purposes of the study are to identify safety, mobility, and infrastructure improvements needed on 287 as well as considering whether it should be designated as an interstate.

As part of this, TxDOT just today has opened a public survey about 287. It can be found at https://burnsmcd.mysocialpinpoint.com/us287/us287-home and I hope you will take a few moments to provide your perspective. The survey is open through Sept. 16.

To read more about the study, visit https://www.txdot.gov/projects/projects-studies/statewide/us287-corridor-interstate-feasibility-study.html.

Thanks for your partnership and input!

In service,
County Judge J.D. Clark

Scattered showers are expected across portions of North Texas tonight into Friday morning with the arrival of a weak cold front. Additional scattered storms may develop Friday afternoon. Severe weather is not expected, but lightning and gusty winds will be possible. Despite the low chance for storms on Friday, most locations will miss out on rain entirely, and heat will continue to be the main hazard. Therefore, the Heat Advisory has been extended for portions of Central Texas through Friday evening where heat index values will reach between 105 to 110 degrees.

Wise County OEM Mitigation and Recovery Coordinator, Alayna Payne, spent the day on a controlled burn today. Burns like this promote the growth of native grass while protecting against the spread of uncontrolled wildfire.

There are multiple chances for showers and storms over the next 24 hours:
- The first outer bands of Beryl should move into eastern Central Texas this afternoon.
