2024 4-H Essay Contest Varietal Honeys- First Place Winner, Landon Moore

Varietal honey is honey that comes from a single source. This honey has a flavor derived from the source flower and can even have a similar scent. In general, lighter colored honeys have a more subtle taste and dark honeys are more intense. Varietal honey has been compared to wine, in that honeys produced in different years can be distinguished, even if they come from the same flower and location. This is due to slight temperature and rainfall differences for the flower that in turn cause small changes to the resulting honey’s flavor. This phenomenon is called terroir and is responsible for the individual taste of each honey harvest. Varietal honey's unique flavor, based on local flowers, and sometimes rarity, has made this type of honey very valued and frequently quite expensive. In America, more than 300 of varietal honeys are produced.

Paradise 4-H members, Caroline Colten and Brayden Baird will be representing Wise County and District 3 4-H this week at Texas 4-H Congress in Austin!

Texas 4-H Congress is a four-day mock legislative experience for 4-H members in grades 9th-12th. 4-H members assume the roles of legislators, lobbyists, and press corps to gain a first-hand understanding of how the legislative process works.

We can't wait to hear about Caroline and Brayden's time in the Capitol!

A 4-H Record Book is no easy feat... the member must recap their 4-H year, project experiences, goals, and more! They must also give detailed information about their projects, leadership, community service, outside 4-H information, and career exploration.

Time, dedication, family, friends, and a whollleee lot of record keeping go into a complete record book. We are so proud of each of the individuals that advanced to the district contest! We can't wait to see how our 1st place Seniors do at the State Contest in August!

Congratulations on a job well done to each of these outstanding 4-H members!

County Record Book results are in!
30 Wise Co. 4-H members turned in a record book containing a written and photo story, project experiences, leadership, community service, and more!

All 1st place books will advance to the District judging on July 9th!

Don’t forget the first CATTLE validation is tomorrow! All steers for 2025 exhibition must be validated at one of our two dates!

This past weekend 6 of our Wise County 4-H members attended the District 3 4-H Teen Leader Lab! Brodie, James, Caroline, Addi, Katelyn, and Ainsley participated in leadership, team building, and communication activities to name a few. They fought hard in the AAA Games with their teams. They danced the nights away and spent their free time by the pool. Brodie retired as the D3 4-H President, and closed the book on his 4-H career. Caroline was elected as the District 3 2nd Vice President - so proud and excited for her! New friends and memories were made and we can’t wait for next year already! 💚🍀

Our senior aged members had some awesome results from the Texas 4-H State Photography Contest!
