In 2010 I went to my 34th high school reunion, It was a combo of three classes. A few people were newly retired and others were talking of retirement. As a newly separated housewife of 25 years, I have never had a career to speak of, little did I know that in a few years I would soon open my own business.

I knew nothing about making ice cream. My now husband, Rod and I went to the national ice cream convention, scoop school and traveled around the country talking with ice cream shop owners. We ate a LOT of ice cream in our journey.

I knew I wanted to be in Downtown Decatur; I had about a three block radius where I wanted to be and if I couldn’t get that, I wasn’t going to do it. Catherine Lee and Lyn Menne who were with the Decatur Downtown Development Authority helped me find a location. I remember calling my mother after I signed the lease in December 2013 and telling her I guess I was locked in now. I learned that contractors promise rather unrealistic timeframes when they want to get your business. We had a few bumps along the way, but the end was in sight and I started hiring.

One of my first hires was Stephanie, who was a student at Georgia Tech. She was way more tech savvy than I and she helped me set up the printer so I promoted her to shift supervisor; her father told her that promotions weren’t supposed to be that easy, but the printer was the least of her accomplishments. As most of my staff was in high school, if you were in college, you were practically guaranteed a supervisor position. Henryk Kumar was my TA while taking classes at Ga State, I hired him to make ice cream. Many, many thanks to Henryk for all his contributions and vison of what Butter and Cream could become. Daniel Cross has been with me from day one and is a rock star.

We opened a couple months later than I had hoped, but I was absolutely amazed at the response our first night. Many of my friends came and so many people I didn’t know. My dear friends, Tom and Jo, brought Rod and I martinis at the end of the evening. A most welcome gift!! We didn’t know what we were doing at first, but we learned and established procedures and policies. Thank you Lily Smith for writing so many of them during the off season.

At the time I thought I would do this for a few years and then be done. WRONG!! We opened in Roswell and the BeltLine. The Roswell property was sold and the building torn down. COVID slowed everything down, so thankful for the PPP and other programs that kept us afloat. I was also so touched at the people who bought gift cards from us during that scary, scary time. In 2023 we opened our Norcross shop and closed our BeltLine shop; that location was never our vibe. We recently opened in Roswell and are so happy to be back there, the response has been overwhelming. We will open in Duluth later this year.

There are so many other people to thank, Sam Macon, Bianca Garcia, Kimberley Horgan, Mona Harris, Ilsse Ortega to name a few. Maddie Mitchell has been the best, she makes everything happen in the shops and always remains cheerful. I am the luckiest person! I look forward to the next 10 years.
