Believe it or not, it's almost time to start making summer plans. The Smithsonian has excellent (paid!) internships in various museums. For more details, attend a virtual info session next week, or talk to OICD.
It was a full house this evening for Maddi Speed's excellent senior thesis presentation. A great talk--a great crowd--great questions--and a great reminder of the thoughtful way Scotties engage important issues.
Please join us for a public research presentation by History major Maddi Speed '24, who is completing an independent senior thesis on the intersection of conservation and imperialism at the turn of the 20th century. For this project, Maddi undertook grant-funded research in England last summer, extending work she had previously done in the History Senior Seminar. This will be a special event! Thursday, November 30 at 5:30 pm in Buttrick 335!
Congratulations to Ayanna Nicole Nanton on her senior seminar presentation "American Slavery: The Commodification of Black Women." In her project, Ayanna uses an economic lens to examine the exploitation of enslaved women during slavery times, resulting in damaging stereotypes that persist until present day. Good job, Ayanna!
Nicole Fong's senior seminar project, "Atlanta Highways Case Study, 1950s-1970s" examines civic battles over infrastructure in a car-centric city. Using the construction of the Downtown Connector and the abandoned plans for the I-485 extension, Nicole illuminates the way that race, class and community engagement interacted--in different ways and with different results--to shape highways and neighborhoods in Atlanta. Great work!
Nathalie Slaughter's senior seminar project on the history of Wonder Woman examines the changing depictions and interpretations of the comic book icon from her creation during World War II to the present. In the work, Nathalie considers Wonder Woman as both a product of her times, but also as an inspriational, feminist hero. Way to go, Nathalie!
For her senior seminar project, Mina Foster has examined the lives and challenges faced by transwomen in New York in the 1980s and 1990s. Entitled "Transgender Women Experiencing the HIV/AIDS Pandemic," Mina's work explores the many ways that transwomen were marginalized within the already marginalized LGBT community, while probing the context of the unfolding AIDS crisis. Well done, Mina!
Say مرØباً or "Welcome" to our newest History Minor Kennedi Malone who will be studying Arabic and Middle Eastern Culture and Society in Morocco next semester! Øظ سعيد "good luck"!
Welcome new HISTORY minor MARIE McCRORY!!
For his senior seminar work, Rafael Albizu Santos has undertaken an environmental history of Puerto Rico. The project, entitled "The Sugar Industry and the Environment of Puerto Rico," examines the effects of soil erosion and invasive species--all tied to colonialism, capitalism and the sugar trade. For this project, Rafi drew on a research trip last summer to the island, and taught us all so much! Outstanding work, Rafi!
