USDA dog dealers, commonly known as brokers, play a very big role in the puppy mill industry.

​​While someone holding a USDA B license can also breed, facilities with this license usually stick to the buying and reselling of puppies bred elsewhere. The puppies will go to broker’s warehouse, which has rooms full of kennels where the puppies stay until they move to the stores. The brokers then drive their routes across the country, which often span days, until each puppies all reach their final destination. The long transport process is often where disease spreads among the puppies.

Longtime customer, wonderful human being and advocate for the animals. Hard to imagine the shelter without the Brellenthin and extended families. Keeping them in our prayers.

This past week the Lakeland Animal Shelter lost a friend, advocate and founding member of our organization. Our dear friend, Tim Brellenthin passed on September 2nd 2024. Tim will be missed by so many throughout our community but possibly none more so than the homeless animals of Walworth County. Tim and his dear wife Dani were integral to the formation of the Lakeland Animal Welfare Society more than 50 years ago and since that time have supported the work of the staff and volunteers at the Lakeland Animal Shelter tirelessly.

Tim and Dani passed this legacy of compassion for animals on to their daughters and grandchildren as well. Our hearts ache for them in this time as they mourn the loss of such a kind, compassionate and gentle man.

Our Shelter facility will be closed to the public this Saturday, September 7th in order to allow our staff and volunteers to attend celebration of life services for Tim. Tim will be forever missed and never forgotten by our Lakeland Animal Shelter Family. Thank you, Tim, for all you did to help save so many! We will continue taking care of the animals until we meet again!

We hear it all the time "there's no definition of a puppy mill so how do you know?"

Although no standardized legal definition for the term “puppy mill” exists, a definition was established in the 1984 “Avenson v. Zegart” court case. The definition was found to be “a dog breeding operation in which the health of the dogs is disregarded in order to maintain a low overhead and to maximize profits.” And according to the Meriam-Webster Dictionary, the term “puppy mill” was first used in 1973 and is “ a commercial farming operation in which purebred dogs are raised in large numbers.

Can you figure out which is which?

"Riley" the pup on the right,was purchased as a puppy from a pet store. His deficits were obvious but the customer was told he was seen by multiple Veterinarians and that he'd grow into his tongue. The price tag for him was $1000 +. The store offered another puppy to replace "Riley". The customer declined as they were already attached to Riley, trading him in was not an option.
(pet stores offer a replacement dog and more than likely Riley would have been euthanized .Reputable breeders do NOT sell to pet stores. I will argue this point until the end of time)
Riley's medical issues don't stop at his deformed jaw and missing teeth; chronic skin and ear issues, and recently diagnosed heart disease can be added to his health problems.
*As this post was being created, "Riley" had a medical emergency and died of congestive heart failure. I groomed him on 7/31* 🥺

RIP Riley, you may have looked odd but you were a sweet, sweet boy and loyal companion even when you didn't feel well. 🐾🌈❤

As you may have guessed. "Waylon" is the dog on the left. Adopted from New Beginnings Shih Tzu Rescue. "Waylon" is the picture of health, adored by his people and is full of personality and silliness.

When we hear that pure bred dogs/puppies, NOT from rescue, are preferred because they are assumed to be of higher quality and have fewer medical and behavioral issues, we know that isn't true in all cases. This comparison proves that point.

Whether you Adopt or Shop, know where your dog is coming. Don't line the pockets of irresponsible backyard breeders ,puppy mills and pet stores
