From Dr. Fink:
"We are set to start the neuro book club on Wednesday of next week. We will meet from noon to 1:00 in room 201 of Merrick Hall. If you have not yet given Dr. Yates the $8 contribution to offset book costs, you need to do so by the end of the day today. If Dr. Yates is not in her office (in the basement of Phillips Hall), you can give the money to the psychology departmental secretary. Dr. Yates will be ordering the books tonight, and you can pick them up either Friday or Monday, depending on when they arrive (she will send an email when they are available).

For the first week, plan to read the Introduction section (pp. 1-17) and pp. 44-59 of Chapter 2. I'm looking forward to getting started next week!"

NeuroTribes by Steve Silberman review – an enlightened take on autism and difference 01/23/2016

Book Club for "NeuroTribes"; author Steve Silberman to speak on campus: Author & science journalist, Steve Silberman, will be speaking on the OWU campus on April 8th. Mr. Silberman has recently published "NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity," which has been been met with very positive reviews.

The OWU Neuroscience program is sponsoring a book club in preparation for the author's visit. Starting Feb. 3, the book club will meet every Wednesday from 12-1, to discuss that week's reading from "NeuroTribes" (usually about 20 pages). The Neuroscience program will cover about half the cost of the book for interested students, and asks each student to contribute $8.

We plan to order all the books in one big order, so if you would like to purchase the book at the reduced cost through the Neuroscience program, please email Prof. Chris Fink ([email protected]) by 5pm on Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Feel free to invite any others who might also be interested.

A part of human brain anatomy that was “lost” from neuroanatomy texts for more than a century appears to play a crucial role in how we perceive the world, according to a new study in Cerebral Cortex. Three years ago, scientists at Indiana University traced the missing brain structure, a long, flat bundle of nerves known as the vertical occipital fasciculus, or VOF, to a series of 1881 drawings by by Carl Wernicke, a German-Austrian neuroanatomist. The structure of the VOF (pictured: blue) forms a white matter highway between two parts of the brain's visual system: the lower, ventral part of the system that processes various properties of visual objects and the higher, dorsal parietal regions which tells the brain which areas to orient its attention. The results play an important role in telling us how different parts of the brain communicate with each other. Read more: bit.ly/1W0QcBU
