Classics at Ohio Wesleyan has a long tradition that dates back to the very founding of the college in 1842 and today, the progr

Seneca’s Oedipus - Classics - Oxford Bibliographies - obo Seneca’s Oedipus, like all his plays, has in the past fifty years moved from being marginalized and rejected to being studied seriously in its own right as a poetic and dramatic product. This is reflected in the appearance in recent decades of two major commentaries and a number of fresh translation...
Our own Dr. Fratantuono has published two more books in the past week! On the left is "Lucullus: The Life and Campaigns of a Roman Conqueror" and on the right is his commentary "Tacitus: Annals XVI." Congratulations, Dr. Fratantuono. We can't wait to see what's next! 📚

The bust on the front is of Chrysippus and the quote on the back is from Juvenal's second satire. It roughly translates to "they are unlearned persons, though you may find their houses crammed with plaster casts of Chrysippus; for their greatest hero is the man who has brought a likeness of Aristotle or Pittacus, or bids his shelves preserve an original portrait of Cleanthes." (Though if you don't like the translation when someone asks what it means, you can tell them whatever you want because they likely wouldn't be able to correct you.)
If you have any concerns about how we can get it to you, just let us know! https://www.customink.com/g/eqn0-00b4-fcgy
The Department of Classics is happy to acknowledge our senior majors of 2017! Congratulations to Ceciley Bigler; Stephanie Rozsa; Lauren Gagne; Scott Payne; and Amanda Sisler!

Emily Austin | Department of Classics I write on emotions in Homer, focusing on unique features of the language of the poems and exploring how they shape the narrative. A related interest is the poems’ presentation of their characters, particularly as these characters relate to one another. I am working on a book, tentatively titled Gri...

Ohio Wesleyan Classics is deeply indebted to our alumnus David Watts, Classics Major, Class of 1970. David was graduated the same year Classics Professor Roland Boecklin retired. That year, Professor Boecklin gave David many, many volumes of his personal Classics library. This summer, David has decided to present the collection back to OWU Classics, as the core of our new department library. We are thankful to David, and happy to honor the memory of Professor Boecklin!
