Happy Birthday Smokey Bear! 80 years ago “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires” began and still sticks and is just as true today!
Happy 80th birthday Smokey Bear from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service!
Did you know that nearly 99% of wildfires in New Jersey are human caused? Smokey Bear’s timeless message, “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires,” remains as crucial today as it was 80 years ago.
Created in 1944, the Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention campaign is the longest-running public service advertising campaign in U.S. history, educating generations of Americans about their role in preventing wildfires.
Join the Forest Fire Service tomorrow, Aug. 10, at Belleplain State Forest to celebrate Smokey’s birthday. More information: https://www.facebook.com/events/495753283131772
With the possibility of more rain, wind and flooding comes the possibility of emergencies to arise. Please take serious consideration all of the warnings from your local FD’s and PD’s. Do not go near downed wires in the possibility of them being energized and do not drive through flooded streets! Turn around or pull over to wait for the waters to recede. Stay safe!
🌪️🌬️🌧️ Tornadoes, strong winds, and some flooding are all possible across our entire area through this evening. If you experience any wind damage or flooding, we appreciate any reports you have to pass along to us, if it is safe to do so. Conditions will improve tonight and a tranquil weekend is expected. In the meantime, stay weather aware today, and have multiple ways to receive warnings!
Tonight your volunteers responded to over 15 calls for service during the hours of 8pm and midnight. Sever flooding streaked across our area and left roads impassable. This was a stark reminder for people in and also around our town to not drive through flooded roadways. Luckily the waters receded and roads were made passable again. Please take the extra time to “turn around and not drown” or wait for storms to pass and roadways to reopen. Thank you to the residents who lended helping hands to push out vehicles of the roadway!
Congratulations to Ptlm. Keith Upton! It’s been a pleasure to work with you on and off scenes! Enjoy your retirement!
Who doesn’t like an evening on the water? How about in the water? Last night your volunteers trained on water rescue operations. Members posed as victims in the water and rescue crews were deployed from our marine unit to rescue and bring them back to the unit. Members also trained on our line launcher (not pictured) for quick deployment of a lifeline to someone in the water. Afterwards, our gear was cleaned and ready to be placed back in service!

For the last 5 days DFD helped to keep the kids cool at camp at Community Park! Our members were more than happy to be able to help the kids beat the heat and enjoy the week! Hope everyone enjoyed as much as we did!
The Delran Fire Department welcomes to the ranks of Firefighter, Omer Aydin, member of Delran Fire Company #2. He has successfully passed all classes and exams including the state exam. Congratulations on you and your fellow classmates achievements and awards!
Also the Class of 103 and all in attendance congratulated Senior Instructor Al Desjardins on his 40 years of dedicated service and instruction at the academy! Thank you Chief for all of your help on and off the scene and academy!
Yesterday the volunteers of the DFD responded to roughly 20 calls for service within a 20 minute span after the storms came through the area. These incidents mainly were west of Saint Mihiel Drive with only a few in the Cambridge area. Within minutes of the first call we had 4 staffed apparatus on the streets tending to these and three fire police vehicles. We would like to thank Delran Police and Delran Pubilc Works for their assistance and also to those homeowners who safely were able to help clean up large trees in the roadways!
If you venture outside and get an odor of the smoke that may be lingering around the area, don’t be alarmed; this is just a change of the winds to bring the smoke of the forest fire towards us. Below is the latest update to the Tea Time Hill Wildfire.

ABOUT PRESCRIBED BURNING:
There are multiple benefits to prescribed burning, which is a safe, effective and efficient means of managing the buildup of forest fuels that may contribute to the start and spread of a wildfire. By actively eliminating sources of fuel that exacerbate forest fire risks through a controlled and prescribed burning program, the Forest Fire Service reduces risk to New Jersey residents, visitors and the environment.
Prescribed burns improve habitat for plants and animals, reduce the presence of damaging insects and ticks, and recycle nutrients into the soil. In addition, prescribed burning is an important part of the state’s carbon defense strategy. Allowing experts to choose the intensity, timing and interval of fire across the landscape may help prevent a larger uncontrolled wildfire, which would contribute to significant carbon loss. Typically, most prescribed burns take place between February and early April.
