Mountains and lakes are some of the things (though not all) that make Colorado awesome. We don't claim to have the lock on these, and early topographic maps of Washington State brought out the beauty in dramatic fashion. Thanks to a recent large donation of rare, century-old topographic maps from the Colorado School of Mines (thanks indeed!!) we now have a new trove of historic 30-minute sheets. Something about the older, more manual, way of making topographic maps just makes it pop. This view here is from the 1924 base map, but with the color added later. The map itself was printed in 1965.
(Washington, Mt. Rainier Quadrangle, 1924, printed 1965 [with additions])
Image 1: A closeup of a portion of the Mt. Rainier 1:125,000-scale topographic map printed in 1965, with topographic linework for glaciers on Mt. Rainier drawn in blue on a white background, and brown linework and green background for other areas, creating a stark contrast between the two zones.
