As you already know, today we “fall back” one hour to mark the end of Daylight Saving Time this year and adjust to the shorter days and longer nights. With this shift, we take notice of the light, and are reminded that, in its many forms, light is an essential element of capturing and composing photographic images.
Here at CPAC, we can see this in the historical and alternative photographic processes that are used to create photographs currently hanging in Lost & Found: An Analog Forever Exhibition.
For instance, Christopher Colville, one of 35 photographers in the show, is inspired by the starry light that cuts through the night sky. His photographic process harnesses light and energy by igniting portions of gunpowder on the surface of silver gelatin paper. The unpredictable results push the limitations of the photographic medium and simultaneously celebrate the fundamental clash of darkness and light.
Colville states, "This work started as an exploration pulling at the base elements of photographic medium, exploring energy, fluid, motion, light, chaos, reactive materials and violence. It has evolved into meditation on the dual nature of creation and destruction."
So when you see that night sky come just a bit earlier these next few months, just think about all the ways light affects the medium we love.
Lost & Found is open until November 23.

"That’s actually why this contest works, and why fans of the event look forward to seeing the results each year. The photos feel familiar — nearly all of them feature buildings Denverites encounter with great frequency. But they invite us to consider them in new ways, to appreciate what they bring to street corners and the skyline, how they lift up the lives of the people who use them or who see them as part of their daily routine. They ask us not to take our city for granted." - Ray Rinaldi
Check out the full article by Ray Rinaldi in The Denver Post on the Y/OUR Denver photo contest. The five award winners can be seen hanging in our gallery until December 31st and all 30 images are viewable at https://cpacphoto.org/your-denver-2024/!
Photo show: Don’t take the city’s best architecture for granted Photo contest captures houses, skyscrapers, museums, parks, streets and monuments through the unique viewpoints of the people who live, work and play among them every day.
