Ephemera is a lovely little shop in the heart of Des Moines' East Village. We bring to the world modern paper indulgences, perfect gifts, custom stationery and invitations, good conversation, and the occasional sweet treat.
Meet Grace! She’s been a shop-gal for a little blink this summer, and will be with us for just a couple more weeks before her path takes her on her next adventure. But what a joy to have her behind the counter while we can! Come say hello to her today - she’ll be in the shop until 5, waiting to help you find a delightful little thing ❤️
They’re here, and they’re exactly what we dreamed they would be! If you placed a t-shirt pre-order, we’ve got a brown paper bag with your name on it! Swing by before, or pick up at our birthday party tomorrow between 4 and 7 o’clock :) It will pair very nicely with cupcakes 🧁
Rows upon rows of the best new things!
OMGosh! Sweet Fans and Friends! It’s ephemera MERCH! In honor of our Golden Birthday (coming up on July 17th and YOU ARE INVITED!!!), we’ve created this golden t-shirt with a timely reminder to: Stay Sharp: Look up! Look around! Be a part of the thing that is happening in front of you. Be curious about the people and spaces around you. Make enough room for the feelings that might come from that engagement. We’ve spent 17 years behind a shop counter, learning and leaning into this stuff, and we’ve gotta say, it’s a pretty dang fun way to live this little blip of a life we’ve got.
Support your favorite paper shop and pre-order your shirt now - we’ll have it in your hands in time to wear to our party on the 17th. (Let’s all be twinsies!)
Link up top and in the comments. (Because we’re having technical difficulties with the nifty little “shop” button that would have streamlined the process 😂)
This little dream team is whipping up something reeeeeaaal cute for the shop today ✨ ✏️ ✨
We love seeing what you set on the counter for us to pack up (especially when it coordinates so well!). Open today until 5 ☀️
The marker test sheets on the front counter always kind of get me, you know? So many different hands making tiny playful doodles, colors chosen a little mindlessly but accompanied, always, with a sense of curiosity. It’s endlessly fun to watch a person on a Wednesday, dressed in a suit, maybe scurrying around on their lunch break, pause for a second that they didn’t know they had to choose between “Honey Orange” or “Candy Pink.” It’s endlessly fun to think about how, in the very beginning, we didn’t know that this sort of thing was why we were opening a shop in the first place.
Rainbows all day, every day 🌈. Have a fun Pride Weekend, friends!!!
It’s the 1st Thursday of the Month, which means Therapy Dogs! Stop by between 11:30 and 1:00, eat a hot dog, and peruse the shop to find a little treat for you or yours. The VERY best days to buy something from your favorite little paper store are on the days when the meters on our street are bagged. Please park, take a (short!) walk, (or forgo it and shop online) and support us during the next couple of days while the celebration gets set up (and visit again this weekend while is in full swing). We’d appreciate seeing you so much ❤️
All the pretty proud pens, neatly in a row ❤️
Just like you remember ‘em :)
This shop. This shop. It takes my breath away to think about what (and who!) Kare and I may have missed had we not had this shop.
One day, 12 years ago, our gal Karen came to work NOT a puppy-owner and, somehow, left work TOTALLY a puppy-owner. I witnessed the whole thing. Love at first site. Charlie and Kare belonged to each other right from the get-go. For such a big decision, there really was no choice.
This morning, forehead-pressed-to-forehead, Karen ushered the legendary Charles from this thing to the whatever-comes-next thing. (We hope that whatever comes next has something to do with popping water balloons and eating treats and sploshing through baby pools and stealing chapsticks and eating more treats (!) and eating peanut butter and rolling in the grass and being the sweetest, most best, most beautiful dog in the whole world).
What a guy, what a love, what luck, what a thing.
(Our hours may (or may not) be a bit edited this week to make room for feelings and naps if the day happens to call for it ❤️)
“But what do you DO with it?” Well, sweet dears, what you DO with a phenomenally gorgeous, Italian-made toolbox, powder-coated in the most saturated, vibrant colors and created to withstand all of time and space is make it a place for YOUR stuff. Not the kids’ stuff. Not your partner’s stuff. YOUR stuff. I brought one of these home with me (color:red) and filled it with “Mom’s Special Art Stuff.” I didn’t even HAVE special art stuff until I brought this home, but this gorgeous vessel INViTED it. Now I have a sketchbook and liquid watercolors, and Posca Pens and pretty highlighters and a scissors that actually CUTS and my favorite pen and a few Washi Tapes and happy stickers. And it THRILLS me when I pull it out from under the bed and open it like any good treasure box would. And maybe I’ll share, sometimes, but maybe I won’t. But I get to decide, and everyone knows it. And having something that’s just MINE feels a little soul-sustaining, sometimes, you know? Like I’m 23 again. But also, as it turns out, like what 43 feels like, too ❤️
Completely delighted to have been invited to play alongside some amazing vendor / magicians for this styled shoot. Bring on COLOR!

Happy Birthday to our Karen! She took the day away from the shop, so Jordan slid into the spot behind her computer screen and we marveled at the number of on-screen notifications that kept popping up, letting us know that yet another person had texted her a happy birthday wish. Which feels just perfect for a person who has the capacity to make anyone who is lucky enough to stand in front of her feel seen and heard and like they are absolutely being ENJOYED. I think this is the 23rd time I’ve had the absolute honor of wishing her a happy birthday, and that is one of the most fortuitous things that has ever happened in this little life of mine. Sing it, say it, or send her a good wish - she deserves every bit of goodness that comes her way today and every day. Yay, birthdays!
PRINTING! Let’s talk about how we can help you!
Last week, we got an e-mail and, in it, the customer wrote “I bet you’re going to cry, but I designed this thing that I’d like to have you print in Canva - do you even do that?”
YES we DO do that! And we would be thrilled to print the file that you bought off of Etsy! And we would be thrilled to print the invitation that your friend designed for you! And yes! Show us what you made in Canva! In short, WE WANT TO PRINT YOUR THINGS!
Pleeeeeease don’t hand over the files for your invitation to a quick-copy center, where well-designed things turn into junky-feeling things really fast because of really bad paper and sub-par print quality. Please let us help you choose great paper and great envelopes to match (we have allll the things to choose from). Let US print your addresses on your envelopes so that you aren’t struggling with your desktop printer at 1 AM! Let us help you make this easy and headache free (it’s possible!).
This is our jam. Let’s get your project finished up :). Reach out and let us know what you’re working on :)
Open Door Days are the best days! It’s a perfect kind of day to come see us - open today until 5!
A customer came in yesterday and did a show-and-tell of the completed pages of the watercolor book she bought in the shop. She has found the time to work on it while sitting in her husband’s hospital room. Another woman came in yesterday to buy envelopes for the thank-you notes she’s been writing to her community that has shown up for her family in a really big way during a really hard time. We hope to bring you into the shop by collecting things for our shelves that feel good and thoughtful and are worth your while. We wait behind the counter with great anticipation to see what resonates with you - what will become a bit of your story.
It is the most fun thing to be a part of :). Happy Thursday - we hope to see you soon!
It’s fun in here! Here today until 5:30, back open again tomorrow from 10 until 5 to help you fill baskets and hearts 🪺
Once, a first-timer in our shop, about 15 minutes in, quietly summed it up…”it’s like a TOY store…but for adults…” Someone the other day said “I know I’m looking straight into your brain when I look around this shop.” Yes, retail is hard sometimes, and not always for the reasons a person who has never worked retail might expect. But when a customer comes in, and they light up? Or when they put their phone away in order to ask about something that has piqued their interest? Or when their entire energy is buzzing with curiosity…retail is really, really easy. Because they GET it. Or they WANT to get it. And we, behind the counter get to reciprocate that goodness. It’s always been our favorite kind of moment, and we appreciate it so much when you bring that spirit in to us. Oh, what fun ❤️
Got a 7-9(ish) year old? Start with these for guaranteed Easter Basket packing success! Jordan is in the shop today, ready to help you find the perfect little bits and bobs. Or shop our site (because ICE was falling from the sky this morning!!!) where you might find some hidden treasures). Seeing what you collect never fails to make us so happy :)
We have Springtime on our minds! These itty-bitties are perfectly pastel, and would look dang fabulous in a grown-up’s Easter Basket. Also, that candle is very, very good (letting you know because it’s so tricky to smell candles through a screen)
First, we want to thank you for the response to our “SOS” on Saturday! You heeded the call, and we’ve spent our morning packing up your online orders - YOU SAVED OUR SATURDAY!!! Packing up online orders reminds us how much we like packing up online orders (you guys find little tidbits online that sneak past people in the shop, and it’s a delight to find what treasures you’ve dug up while perusing our site!). I’ve pulled some goodies this morning perfect for Easter Baskets, and I’ll be posting those collections in our stories. If you’d like to mark the basket task “done” by purchasing the whole collection, just message us and we’ll get you taken care of :). Peruse away!!!
SAVE OUR SATURDAY!!! We fought the good fight, explaining that “Nope! Races that close the street in front of our shop AREN’T actually good for business.” Annnnnnnnd….we lost (and are feeling a bit depleted about it). If you want to help, hop onto our website and buy some things! We have so many new goodies that would be great for an Easter Basket (including a huge Ooly restock), great candles, great greeting cards from so many new lines). We don’t usually beg, but eeeeeek!!! We kind of need you today!!! (And rumor has it that the street will be reopened after 2, so please come in! And if you’re willing, we’d be thrilled if you’d find a parking space and take a walk). Any way is a good way today! Thank you so much in advance!
An homage to the daffodils popping out of the ground in my garden, the two women I saw dressed up as leprechauns who were walking down the sidewalk this morning, and the FEELING of fresh things, new things, March things, green things. Happy Wednesday, shop friends!
I really like it here ❤️
We made it! Here’s to enough sun to take a walk after work! And enough light for us to start entertaining the idea that soon-soon, we’ll be sitting on our decks at 8pm, sipping something cold with the sound of a lawn-mower in the distance (I can smell the grass, can you?!). Never will I ever get bored with the feelings I feel when switching from “cozy season” to “grill season” (and back again!). Oh, sun…so nice to see you, and so nice to get to keep you for a bit extra at the end of the day ☀️ Happy SUNday, friends :)
