Matéria Gallery
Contemporary Art and Design Gallery, in Core City and Cass Corridor, Midtown, Detroit.
Opening in October 2008, Simone DeSousa Gallery was born as a physical reminder of art’s connectivity to community and social transformation, a space designed to channel inspiration in the form of some of the best manifestations of contemporary art today, and cultivate a new culture of art collecting in Detroit. Simone DeSousa Gallery was formerly known as Re:View Contemporary Gallery.
🔥 TONIGHT 🔥 5-7 pm 🔥 Bianca Beck’s See Me Plural opens with a reception with the artist from 5-7 pm💫
Matéria Gallery is pleased to present See Me Plural, Bianca Beck’s first solo exhibition in Detroit.
See Me Plural presents paintings started pre-conception and worked cumulatively over the course of three years in which Beck watched their child develop from an embryo in sonograms to now, an almost two-year-old. This art is made from the messiness and magic of unbroken days and nights with an infant and also the breaking of patterns that they enact as a q***r parent in an un-gendered family. The variations in line, style, time, space, and buildup of paint are both a reflection and an accumulation of this life.

🔥 TONIGHT 🔥 5-7 pm 🔥 Simon Anton and Bilge Nur Saltik: Inside/Outside opens at Materia’s EDITION space in conjunction with the Detroit Month of Design 💫
Inside/Outside explores design ideas that exist in both inside and outside manifestations, and blur the lines between art - design - architecture. The project takes place in Matéria Gallery’s EDITION ( ) space in Detroit’s Core City neighborhood. Each artist/design studio will present a new collection of works as part of the exhibition.
Simon Anton’s works are made using an experimental process of grafting waste plastic onto sculpted metal armatures by wrapping them in heating wire and submerging them in vats of locally sourced plastic waste. Over time the plastic grows onto the armatures, creating colorful 3D wall works - part painting, part sculpture, part architectural study. All works are in the vein of plastic material research which Anton has been engaging with since 2012. Anton’s works for the exhibition include a new collection of small studies and a larger wall sculpture that juxtapose plastic waste with the language of architectural ornamentation.
Bilge Nur Saltik’s studio practice spans across multiple design disciplines and mediums, reimagining timeless materials such as glass, ceramic, stone, wood, and fabric, and incorporating new technologies, to bring new objects to life. For Inside/Outside, Nur will be presenting The Essence Collection, an exploration of organic forms through the lens of parametric design. In this new body of work, the designer delves into the complexities of curvilinear surfaces, utilizing advanced parametric techniques to create intricate, fluid geometries.

In this new body of work, the designer delves into the complexities of curvilinear surfaces, utilizing advanced parametric techniques to create intricate, fluid geometries. The material choice, 3D printed copper, is particularly compelling, as it embodies a deceptive quality that challenges the viewer’s perception of form and substance. Over time, the copper interacts with natural elements, evolving and changing, adding an additional layer of meaning to the work. The result is dynamic pieces that bridge the gap between digital fabrication and the organic processes of nature, inviting contemplation on the relationship between man-made structures and the natural world.

An in-depth insightful reflection on Brenda Goodman’s drawing practice by John Yau has just been published on Hyperallergic💫💫💫

Brenda Goodman’s Unknowable Language of Grief
The fluidity of the artist’s line parallels her thought process and openness to taking unexpected paths, often prompted by a memory or life event.
By John Yau, August 13, 2024
“Over the course of a seven-decade career, the one constant in Brenda Goodman’s practice has been drawing. The fluidity of her line parallels her thought process and openness to taking unexpected paths, often prompted by a memory or life event. In 2020, she told Clarity Haynes in a BOMB magazine interview that her work is about “pain and sadness,” adding that “everything I am at seventy-six years old is in the paintings, and even though they’re not gut-wrenching, they’re still me, and all my life experiences are in them.” Alongside, and sometimes in tandem with, her paintings, Goodman has made nuanced portraits of her pets as well as line drawings that are in conversation with Alfred Kubin’s macabre subjects.
Often small, these works continued to expand in the mind of this viewer long after seeing them. Paul Klee famously described his process as “taking a line for a walk.” In counterpoint to his statement of authorial control, I want to suggest that Goodman’s line takes her to places where trauma and healing, grief and comfort coexist. Looking at her graphic work — spanning from her years as a precocious student in Detroit in the 1960s to the present, when I recently visited her studio — it seemed obvious to me that a museum should devote an exhibition to her drawings, accompanied by a substantial publication.”
Matéria will be presenting an exciting solo show of drawings by the artist ranging from 1969 through 2008 at our new location in the fall of 2026.

Matéria is pleased to present Standards, Ian Swanson’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, and first in his hometown of Detroit since 2016. Standards brings together the artist’s latest cycle of large-scale monochrome paintings layered with dense textures and expressive mark-making after a period of increasingly subtractive approaches to his painterly application. Swanson’s relationship to the figure and ground continues to manifest in abstractions that ruminate on the confines of physical experience. His subjects are intimately woven into their environments, like v***r forming and then dissipating with time, each composition providing glimpses into a world of wandering silhouettes, momentarily suspended.
