Bayhealth
Bayhealth is a technologically advanced not-for-profit healthcare system employing over 3,200 with a medical staff of 400 physicians.
Bayhealth’s mission is to strengthen the health of our community, one life at a time. As central and southern Delaware’s largest healthcare system, Bayhealth is comprised of Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus and Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus, the freestanding Emergency Department in Smyrna as well as numerous satellite facilities and employed physician practices encompassing a variety of special
For Bayhealth’s 30 new physician residents, the White Coat Ceremony on June 27 officially marked their transition from medical school graduates to the next phase of their medical careers. As the tradition goes, the residents get to trade in the shorter white coat they wore in medical school for the longer white coat worn by practicing physicians as they begin their residency programs.
At the White Coat Ceremony in the Community Room at the Sussex Campus, internal medicine resident Dr. Bradlee Palmquist served as emcee, offering greetings and words of wisdom to the new residents. “I can attest to the fact that the White Coat Ceremony is just the beginning of a wonderful new chapter. I encourage each of you to soak up the moment today – the feelings of accomplishment and joy and celebrate how far you have come,” said Dr. Palmquist.
Bayhealth’s graduate medical education (GME) programs have continued to grow since launching the first residency programs in central and southern Delaware and welcoming our very first residents in 2021. The newest classes of the four residency programs include 13 internal medicine residents, 8 family medicine residents, 3 general surgery residents, and 6 emergency medicine residents. This now brings the total to 84 physician residents advancing their training at Bayhealth and adding to the primary and specialty care we offer to community members.

This year Bayhealth’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program comes full circle as its inaugural residency classes—the first residents at Bayhealth and in central and southern Delaware—graduate from their programs. The Family Medicine Residency Program held graduation festivities on June 21 at the Bayhealth Blue Hen Conference Center. Each of the seven graduating residents was individually honored, and many family members, friends and program staff were in attendance to join in this moment and celebrate their collective accomplishments.
“Our program would not be what it is today without all the dedication, energy and innovative ideas that our inaugural residents have poured into this program since they began,” said Interim Family Medicine Residency Program Director Angela Debo, DO. “We are grateful for them and proud of the physicians they have become, and know they have very successful careers ahead of them.”
We are proud to report that a number of the graduating residents will be staying at Bayhealth. Paulina McCabe, DO, and Kendall Barton, MD will continue caring for our community as the newest physicians to join the Bayhealth Primary Care, Milford and Bayhealth Primary Care, Blue Hen practices, respectively.
The following graduates will pursue positions at other institutions:
Tahseen Chowdhury, MD - Outpatient position in family medicine in Marlow Heights, Maryland
Melissa Eppinger, MD - Private practice primary care physician at Vanguard Medical Group in Verona, New Jersey
Samantha Ginder, DO – Attending physician at York Urgent Care in Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Sameer Valluri, MD – Private practice at Howard Brown Health in Chicago, Illinois
Congratulations and best wishes to all of our resident graduates!

Bayhealth’s Carolyn Baitsholts, RN, at Bayhealth Kent Campus has earned a DAISY Award for her compassionate care.
The DAISY award recognizes certain nurses for the extensive care they provide. All nurses are required to tend to their patients but some go above-and-beyond. The DAISY award is a way for patients and families to extend their thanks to nurses they feel have provided the utmost care and respect for them and their needs.
When caring for an expecting mother, Baitsholts was compassionate and a consistent advocate for her patient. Baitsholts thoroughly explained information regarding the patient’s care plan to ensure that she was aware and comfortable with everything.
Baitsholts demonstrated what her patient called “proactive nursing”, putting the utmost effort into ensuring that her delivery was safe. Her patient noted how multiple team members praised Baitsholts as a compassionate coworker and leader in the field of nursing.
“The unknown of this delivery process was scary and met with challenges along the way. Carolyn was my advocate, my educator, and biggest fan,” said Baitsholts’ grateful patient and nominator.
DAISY Award honorees are chosen by nurses, administrators, peers, physicians, volunteers, patients, and families. If you know a Bayhealth nurse who deserves to be nominated, visit Bayhealth.org/DAISY and fill out the nomination form.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare professionals saw a tremendous uptick in generosity of community members gifting them everything from discounted services to free lunches. Just as the pandemic waned, so too did donations but for Dawn Hastings and her fellow congregation at House of Praise for All People in Greenwood they wanted to ensure that healthcare professionals continued to feel seen and loved. Thus stemmed a food donation that happens the last Tuesday of every month to the team in the Bayhealth Emergency Department, Sussex Campus. Read more here https://bayhealth.info/HoueOfPraise today.
