Our latest Done in a Day project. Feed my Starving Children
A few weeks ago, we gathered for the first Done in a Day session of this new Rotary year. Our group of 17 included members, spouses, and many children - with our youngest volunteer at 6 years old. Feed My Starving Children was grateful for our hard work in assembling ‘manna’ packs and also for our $500 donation.
Together with other volunteer groups, we packed over 45,500 meals and provided food for 125 schoolchildren for a year.
After the session, many of us broke bread together! Hope you can join us at our next Done In A Day project!
Life is about experiences, memories, family and friends. And our past President experienced a day to remember. Harry McCabe took an Honor Flight of his life. He was met on his return by fellow Rotarians with great pleasure.

“ The lead up to the day of the trip to Washington D.C., and the aftermath have combined to shake up old memories and create some thoughts and feelings that l will carry with me for the rest of my life. I cannot express how grateful this veteran feels about the Honor Flight Chicago (CHF) organization. I’ve observed close associates at American Legion Post 80 and their reactions to their Honor Flight experiences, but I never could imagine the impact.
Dan Harrington was a CHF Ambassador and our Bus Captain on Wednesday. He did a marvelous job attending to all of us “Senior” Veterans' needs as he entertained us with his knowledge and compassion for our country.”
“The most moving part of the day was the homecoming reception we received at Midway airport. The Honor Guards, bagpipes, and military that met us at the gate were a prelude to the scene at the main terminal. Throngs of people wildly cheering and waving welcome home signs & American flags. I was overtaken with tears of joy when I spotted my siblings and members of my Rotary family. Being so warmly thanked for my service had never happened before.”
“The outpouring of love will never be forgotten.”
In respectful gratitude, Harry M. McCabe, ARMY.
It’s amazing what comes from Rotary GroveFest. Want to meet our newest member?
Meet Patrick Doyle!
Patrick spent 20+ years in Chicago’s hospitality industry. He was the Director of Operations for a restaurant group with 5 locations. Several years ago, he made a career change to focus on his family and start a partnership with a local insurance agency by opening a new office in Downers Grove.
Rotary GroveFest drew him to our club. Patrick is excited to be part of such a service-focused group of leaders. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, fishing, cycling and dining out. Be sure to introduce yourself to Patrick and thank him for becoming our newest member.
Patrick Doyle left, and President Richard Lam, right.
What a life changing experience with Jeff Molby, Chemo Riders, a fellow Rotarian from Caro Michigan.
Cancer treatment often requires a ton of transportation which is a huge burden on patients and their support systems. The American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery program has been helping with this problem for over 40 years. Road to Recovery works like Uber except the driver is a volunteer and the goal is to save a life.
Since the pandemic, it has been incredibly short on drivers. Jeff is a semi-retired empty-nester who took it upon himself to raise the alarm. He showed the community how they can help their neighbors in need by recruiting drivers to get people to their appointments, recruiting sponsors to help with program overhead (support, dispatching, background checks, etc), recruiting cyclists to become the local voice for this cause and recruiting fans to spread the word and cheer everyone on.
Jeff Molby is a Rotarian from Caro, Michigan, where he's been volunteering for the American Cancer Society through Relay For Life for the last few years. He's also a minimalist who loves to travel, so in October, he sold everything and set off on a two-year bike tour around the country in order to help people get to their chemo appointments.
We couldn’t be happier! President Richard Lam, presented to member and Baked Apple family representative Nick Doulas, with our plaque that reads "Rotary Meets Here". Nick will proudly display it at the front door of The Baked Apple!
Congratulations to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital on a very successful procedure. And Congratulations to Dr’s. Ethan Kosova and Hazem Alhawasli.

Cardiologists Dr. Ethan Kosova and Dr. Hazem Alhawasli performed Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital’s first successful TriClip procedure last month. The TriClip is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat patients with a severely leaky heart valve on the right of the heart. Until earlier this year, there were no minimally invasive procedures approved. It’s expected to become a common practice over the next several years.

Well did it. With little time and short notice, our club will be donating these wonderful school supplies to the Peoples Resource Center, along with an additional $500 check from our club. Although the concert in the park was cancelled within the first song, we still enjoyed our social. Thank you all who donated and sent a check for this wonderful organization.

Are you coming Tuesday night to Fishel Park with a donation?
It’s all about growing….We are ecstatic to introduce our newest member, Kim Moustas. Kim is a dedicated and a passionate real estate agent with Keller Williams Experience in Downers Grove. She heads the Kim Moustis Group and is especially passionate about helping senior citizens.
Kim has her Senior Real Estate Specialist designation and truly loves to help seniors sell their homes when they feel they are ready to make the next move in their life. Kim’s background is not only in real estate but in providing health care at home to seniors as a physical therapist in the past. It has allowed Kim to form relationships with seniors and form a solid understanding of the unique needs of senior citizens. Kim recently completed 21 years as a real estate professional and, throughout that time, has focused much of her energy to helping families and seniors to feel comfortable, excited, and confident when buying or selling their homes.
Kim is married to Rotary Club, member John Moustis.
Please welcome Kim Moustis to our Rotary Club! (pictured with our President, Richard Lam)
Goodness pays off. We don’t need the recognition but it’s always good to know our continuous work is appreciated. Thank you Villages in Partnership.
Here’s an idea. Jump on Amazon (Prime Days) and order some things. It’s too easy. Then bring to Fishel Park on Tuesday. It’s as easy as that.
Now here’s a novel idea for you. Jump on Amazon (Prime Days), and order a few of these items and have them delivered to your home in a day. Don’t need to shop yourself. It’s so easy. And then bring them on Tuesday night to Fishel Park and we’ll take it from there.
We are asking for your help. The Rotary Club of Downers Grove is in need of Back to School items to be donated to the People's Resource Center. Make it easy and order on Amazon today…it’s Prime Day. You can donate these items to us at the July 23rd Tuesday Night Concert in the Park. We will have a table there so please bring a donation and a chair to enjoy the free concert in Fishel Park, featuring "One Night Band". THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
Tonight we bid a fond farewell to our outgoing president Harry McCabe, and welcome in Richard Lam as our new 2024-2025 President. Harry did a stellar job and we want to thank him for his leadership and share his last year’s fun and productivity.
Volunteers, we thank you all…We couldn’t have done what we did at Rotary GroveFest this year without letting you know how tremendous it was. We need to thank the over 800 volunteers who gave their time and hard work to make this the success we had.
In our past 12 months, proceeds from Rotary GroveFest have contributed to us donating over $184,000 the past 12 months, mainly consisting of $75000 in scholarships, $27000 local Not for Profit organizations, $43000 in community grants and contributions, and over $33000 supporting our International Water Well Project in Malawi Africa.
