How cute is sweet Riley in his Holter monitor vest? He was a rockstar for his application and removal appointments. He was able to roam around our lobby easily in his vest with no restrictions.

The Holter monitor is a pain-free, easy solution for investigating an arrhythmia. The appointments for application and removal are within 24 hours of each other, and in between these appointments your dog spends the day at home with the vest relaxing and doing their normal day-to-day activities (minus swimming and bathing!).

When some facilities perform an abdominal ultrasound, they may only perform a focused based exam. This means they are targeting one or two organs at a time. Our talented team of sonographers complete the same full, comprehensive exam every time they perform an ultrasound. So even if your veterinarian is only worried about the liver for example, we will still interrogate and image the spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, urinary bladder, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and lymph nodes. This is done to ensure every patient receives the same, high quality exam every time and no pathology gets overlooked. Depending on what the sonographer is visualizing, there may be additional images done to ensure our board certified radiologists have all the necessary information to help aid the correct diagnosis and treatment plan.

Now offering Holter Monitor services!!

Holter monitors are portable electrocardiogram devices that record tracings of your dog's heart typically for a period of 24 hours. This process is helpful in detecting arrhythmias that may only happen occasionally and/or may not easily seen on a routine ECG. Patients that our team has seen for an echocardiogram may have received recommendations for a Holter monitor based on the cardiologist's concern for an arrhythmia. Previously, patients would have to go to the cardiologist directly which can take weeks to months to be seen. Now with this new service, patients can get a report from a board certified cardiologist based on the results of the Holter monitor tracings. And just like our echocardiogram service, the reports from this test are sent back to the referring veterinarian so care can be continued with their team.

Fasting for abdominal ultrasounds-why is it necessary?

We ask that our patients are fasted for 12 hours prior to their abdominal ultrasound. While some animals may think they can't miss a meal (we know what those early morning cat cries and food motivated Labradors are like!), it is very important for them to have an empty gastrointestinal tract.

During the GI portion of an abdominal ultrasound, the sonographer is taking a close look at the stomach, small intestine and large intestine. They are taking measurements to determine wall thickness of these varying regions. When the GI tract is filled with food, that food creates gas. Ultrasound does not see well through gas and air, so this gas creates a large shadow, making it sometimes impossible to see the structures lying underneath. For example, the pancreas sits very close to the stomach, so when the stomach is full, properly visualizing the pancreas is challenging. Check out the pictures below to see the difference between a stomach that has little to no food in it, versus one that has food material in it.

A few weeks ago, Katlynn our CEO had the privilege of speaking at the WILCO Area Career Center to high school students enrolled in their career program. This particular group of students have shown an interest in veterinary medicine for their futures.

Katlynn was able to show the students the wonders of diagnostic imaging and ultrasound. In doing so, she even got to expand her wheelhouse and scan a few exotic patients! While our team only images furry patients, Katlynn enjoyed checking out these scaly friends. Check out the pictures below of her scanning a bearded dragon and a snake!

We look forward to future opportunities to help shape the minds of future veterinary medicine professionals and hope this class enjoyed our demonstrations!
