Hard at work, the members work their fine motor skills by folding, sealing and addressing the donor newsletters.
When a long-term member retires from Clubhouse and can settle into life with their family, you celebrate the years of friendship and laughter spent together. Today we celebrated Mario and all that he has given to Synapse House. Not only is he a mentor for members interested in helping with maintenance unit work, he’s also one of our daily chefs who spoils us with his homemade empanadas, pork and rice (one of our culinary unit side dishes “Mario’s Rice”). Mario, enjoy the next phase of what life has for you, you will be greatly missed and will always have a space among us. “Bippity Pow” and “oh Yeah” IYKYK
We also got to celebrate a milestone birthday with Frank today. Sloppy joes, cake and ice cream to put us all to sleep this afternoon and dream about the good things in life. Happy birthday, Frank! 40 is the new 20 🥳
Today we were able to log into our student, Obi’s, Capstone presentation to earn his degree as a Doctor of Occupational Therapy. During Obi’s time at he ran weekly groups training members in the area of financial safety and responsibility. His pre and post test data showed significant results indicating that our members who are post-brain injury benefited from financial skills training. Obi thank you for your dedication to Synapse House and your project. We wish you the best in your OT career.
Synapse House got to experience history today during the solar eclipse 🌑☀️ we were lucky to have a member’s family donate glasses so we can safely watch the event….while also getting outside on this beautiful day for fresh air!

It’s been a busy day at our Clubhouse! In honor of Brain Injury awareness month, our student Carli organized the Unmasking Project for expressing ourselves and our identity post-injury. Carli also presented her journal club presentation on commonly used interventions for the brain injury population. In the Clubhouse, 2 members started a chess group and we finished the day with a cake brought in by member B.L. to celebrate all of the March Birthdays!
As their level Il fieldwork experience winds down, our OT students are presenting research articles to the Clubhouse. Today, Adam, presented on how having an acquired brain injury may impact returning to work, and how Occupational Therapists are able to provide therapeutic intervention in specific areas.
We’re getting very seasoned with our community outings and today we visited the in Oak Brook to check out the beautiful rocks and gems on display there. Members reported that the museum was easily accessible which made navigation into the building and around the displays easy. Another fun adventure!
Fine motor skill fun
It was a busy day in and out of the Clubhouse. Two more members successfully passed their Illinois Food Handlers exam and obtained Food Handlers Cards.
We also had a group of five members attend our monthly Operation Support Our Troops volunteer outing to help package items for the troops.
It feels good to do good and give back to our community. .s.o.t.a
A HUGE round of applause for C.T. acquiring her Illinois Food Handlers Card today. Our OT student, Adam, ran a 4 week training class in preparation for Members to take the exam and obtain their cards. C.T. is our first Member to successfully complete her training and examination. This is an excellent first step toward potential employment and the work readiness program offered at our Clubhouse. Congrats to you!!!! 👏👏👏
Balloon volleyball day! Hand-eye coordination, focus, upper body endurance and a whole-lot of fun!
March is Brain Injury Awareness month 💚 our Clubhouse jumped right into the spirit of the month with this self-advocating project to identify our positive strengths & attributes post-brain injury.
Today we leapt on over to our monthly volunteer opportunity at .s.o.t.a and packaged powdered drinks and batteries for our troops. We are always happy to offer our time to help create these care packages which also benefits our recovery, performing fine motor tasks with our hands that are purposeful.
Today, the employment Members visited a dog daycare/boarding business to learn about careers in animal care. Thank you Tail Gate for Dogs for the informational career discussion, tour and lunch! Our Members who are seeking employment benefitted greatly from this visit and were all smiles when they returned to the Clubhouse today.
