This was us.
7 years ago, literally moments after the state board came in and gave us the green light.
I had nothing.
I saved up all my tips for 6 months.
My grandmother co-signed for me. I put a deposit on this space with all the money I had.
I put the product and haircolor on my first credit card.
Any extra money I made went towards Licenses, signage, Peco, Doylestown Borough, there was so much involved I had no clue.
I raided Nana's basement, bought some second hand furniture from a salon that was closing and worked with what I had.
I didn't know the stress it would put on me and my family.
I mean, I managed a haircuttery for a little bit, did the Summit Salon program, and did a lot of business classes when I first started the industry back when Raylon CAMP was a program in the early 2000ish
I didn't know much about taxes.
I didn't really know what things cost and the financial burden and real responsibility it all really was.
I was the only employee.
It was all on me.
I didn't know where I was going or what I was doing, but I knew what I wanted.
I just wanted to feel comfortable and safe. I wanted to just be myself without any judgment.
Since I got my first job at Ralph's Corner Hair Cuttery and started tech school at NMTCC, I felt like someone gave me purpose.
My teachers and any boss I had took me under their wing and gave me the guidance I needed in my life.
I was so lost.
And what I knew before I decided to take this massive risk is that I wanted to be that person for others.
I want to help give others purpose.
They say this phrase alot "when I become a business owner, I'll be able to have more time and more money and do what I want. "
Hahaha friend, this is very false assumption!
When you become a business owner, it is the most selfless, time consuming, expensive thing I have ever done.
So here's my advice.
Don't do it if you're sick of where you're working. It's not the answer. Do it because you want to change the world and help others on their journey.
If you're looking for more, moving salons and finding a culture that speaks your language, maybe your answer.
